171 companies apply for 32 FM Radio licenses
ISLAMABAD, June 01 (Online): Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has received the highest offer of Rs. 10.5 million for the Karachi during the bidding for awarding 32 licenses for setting up FM radio Stations.
The bidding, organized by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, was presided over by the chairman Mian Muhammad Javed with other officials of the authority.
Eighty-two of the 171companies, which had applied for the licenses, were invited for taking part in the bidding, said the chairman of the PEMRA, Mian Muhammad Javed, at the opening of the bidding.
In all, 32 licenses will be issued to the private sector for setting up FM radio stations in 80 cities.
The cities for which biddings were received were Karachi, Peshawar, Hyderabad, Quetta, Faisalabad, Raiwind, Sadiqabad, Gujar Khan, Bhurban, Toba Tek Singh, Dadu, KalarKahar, DI Khan etc.
For setting up two FM radio stations in Karachi, 13 parties participated in the bidding in which the highest bid of Rs. 10.5 million was offered by Sachal Pvt Ltd.
Talking to newsmen after the bidding ceremony, Mian Muhammad Javed, chairman PEMRA said a new era of liberalization and de-regulation had begun in the country to give equal opportunity to the private sector in making the public opinion in the right direction.
He said that the authority had issued 55 licenses in private sector for establishment of FM Radio stations in the parts of the country, which speaks volumes about the government's commitment to provide free access to the information to the common man.
