http://www.dawn.com/2004/08/27/nat7.htmISLAMABAD, Aug 26: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Thursday signed an agreement with Pakistan that would give it dialogue partner status with the bloc.
The framework agreement was signed by GCC secretary general Abdul Rahman al Attiyah, Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri and Kuwait Foreign Minister Mohamed Sabah al Salem al Sabah.
Kuwait is current chairman of the Riyadh-based GCC, which groups Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The Kuwaiti foreign minister said the agreement would bring Pakistan and the GCC closer.
It would promote economic cooperation, exchange of information and encourage technical economic cooperation with the grouping, he added. The framework agreement would lead towards the establishment of a free trade area, he said.
Separately he inked agreements with Pakistan to enhance bilateral political consultations and to boost cooperation in curbing narcotics trafficking, officials said. -AFP

that definitely is a good move, they should be proud for having pakistan as a Complete GCC partner. I think with the passage of time and with a more stable pakistan this will eventually end up in GCC complete member ship. However its only good if we try and get the economic benifits out of it and stop sending cab drivers to the countries.

I dont know why but I dont see this to change anything within the nations which are in this organization. All the nation prior to Pakistan's induction are rich and oil producers and all are in middle east. Pakistan seems to be the odd man in. I dont know how it will be governed or who will represent Pakistan in the meetings and what those meetings will accomplish other then the ussual which can be accomlished on one to one basis.
The free trade area which they are discussing can actually hurt some of the countries within GCC. UAE could be facing some serious threat because of Gawader and they know so why is the right question to ask about this induction.

The GCC is a community based on the EU.. there are plans to bring in a single currency to bring about a single monetary policy.
GCC nationals can travel within the region without a visa and can own properties in each other's countries. (pretty much on the same lines as in the EU).
This is the first time that I have heard about Pakistan getting a dialogue partner status. I will research on the topic and post some results if I get any.
Just to enlighten the forum.. cab drivers aren't the only one's that Pakistan exports out to the GCC countries. Pakistanis have played a good part in the development of the GCC countries since the 70s.
There are Pakistanis a sizeable number, working as engineers, doctors, accoutants and bankers. Infact Pakistanis were the prime bankers in this area, thought the BCCI debacle put us on the defensive.
Just to quote some figures,. Two GCC countries- Saudi and UAE host the second and third largest pakistani communities outside of Pakistan (larget being in the UK).
Pakistanis also own businesses in the UAE, and are market leaders in the Textiles industry.
I can also speak of the chartered accountant's community the GCC countries in all have around 400 registered CAs (of the 500 plus residing overseas), this do not include other finance professionals like CPAs, ACCA's and CA's from other countries.

Sharjeel,, most of them are companies of large pakistani textile groups (from pakistan) there material comes from their parent/sister concerns,.. and since I was the auditor for some of them,. I have seen them picking cotton and yarn from Pakistan, Egypt, China and even India... depends on the market. I know companies here that are into weaving and spinning . Plus there are garments and stitiching all over the place. Dubai is also coming up with a Textile city by mid of 2005 (sort of a freezone with facilities and stuff)

Good for you,..
when u step into the family business:
Please keep in mind that Pakistan has some of the best raw materials for the textile industry, plus some of the best technicians,,. some times it may make business sense to got to another country but a little bit patriotism goes a long way.
