PAKISTAN is ready to open its market to Uganda’s textiles, described as being of high quality.
Syed Zahid Hussain, the Pakistani High Commissioner, who toured Apparels Tri-Star’s factory in Bugolobi last week, said they are trying to promote the South to South corporation.
He was accompanied by Pakistan’s honorary Consulate to Uganda, Bonny Katatumba.
“We share many things with Uganda when it comes to development. I am going to file a proposal with our government to drop taxes on textiles so that our people will be able to access them,” Hussain said.
He said their domestic demand for textiles was growing fast in tempo with the economy.
Houssain said Pakistan was the forth biggest producer of cotton, producing 14.5 million bales last year.
Vellupillai Kananathan, the Tri-Star chief, said “As soon as we are able to satisfy the market demand in the US under the AGOA initiative, we will look at selling our products into the local market.”
He said they would purchase local cotton if quality issues are addressed.
