Pakistani products display corner to be set up in Lisbon

KARACHI (May 29 2005): Pakistan's Ambassador-designate to Portugal, Ms Fauzia Sana has said that she will open a Pak products display corner at Pakistan Embassy in Lisbon and will hold small products exhibitions at big shopping centres in Portugal to introduce Pak product to boost exports from Pakistan. Speaking at a meeting of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Saturday, she advised Pakistan's business community to assure on-time delivery of export consignments and improve quality of goods. She noted that it was a general complaint from foreign buyers that Pakistan's exporters are not providing goods as per sample; containers carry less weight, or goods are not as per specification and are of poor quality.

She said that out of total exports textile sector contributes around 68 percent. She advised the business community to diversify exports and discover more markets for Pakistani products.

She said that European Union (EU) is much concerned on three points: environment, child labour and human rights. She added Pakistan's business community should take care of these points, as EU restricts import of goods from developing countries on these issues.

Fauzia said that Indian exporters are careful in their exports and they are sending certificate that no child labour is used in manufacturing of their goods. No such step is taken by Pakistan's exporters, she added.

She urged the members of KCCI to advise her what steps she might take to boost Pakistan's exports in the light of WTO rules and regulations.

She said that whatever trade inquiries are received by embassies, they are sent to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) as per rules, and it circulates the same among trade bodies.

Fauzia said that it was a general complaint from foreign buyers that Pakistan business community does not respond to inquiries. She advised business community to conduct market survey in different countries to boost exports from Pakistan KCCI, senior vice-president Abrar Ahmed said that Pakistan is producing top quality engineering products and agriculture value-added products and urged the Ambassador to help the business community to boost their exports.

Welcoming the guests, KCCI President Khalid Firoz urged the Ambassador to send trade inquiries direct to the chambers and trade bodies for early response.
