Mai Kolachi Road project to be completed by June 30, 2006: ISPR
KARACHI (September 08 2005): Development and rehabilitation of road from Mai Kolachi to Submarine Chowk is one of the mega projects of Karachi. It includes widening of 4.5 km Mai Kolachi Road from M.T. Khan Chowk to Submarine Chowk and construction of underpass at Schon Circle, says an ISPR press release on Wednesday.
It said that the project was necessitated by Karachi Port Trust (KPT) to smooth traffic flow in the area, adding the project is being implemented by Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), which is one of the prestigious and biggest construction organisations of the country.
Nespak, the prime consultant agency, is providing consultancy services to the project. Completion date of the project is June 30 next year as per contract agreement.
The project is spread in the urban area containing complicated utility service networks, which have been impeding the progress of work to a great extent.
The Schon underpass become the focus of all construction activities which is the hub of commercial area of Clifton. More than 0.4 million vehicles pass daily at Schon intersection from multi directions.
Taking the first underpass of Karachi as challenge, FWO fully mobilised its resources aiming its early completion before 30 June 2006.
The work is being executed day and night and at times it seemed the project would be completed by end July 2005, but due to high water table, delays in shifting of utility services and continuous flow of heavy traffic, the construction activities prolonged beyond July 2005.
As soon as the impediments were removed, FWO has accelerated the peace of work, which is being appreciated by print-media and local public.
Beyond the expectation of common man, FWO made an endeavour and succeeded in opening the traffic through the Schon Bridge on September 1, 2005 as promised by FWO at various forums. People are delighted on early opening of the bridge and foresee that the underpass will also be opened very soon.
The FWO has also provided facility of right tuning at intersection as was given by Nespak and conceived by KPT. The Schon project would be a unique gift for the people of Karachi, the ISPR press release added.
