Jordanian group to invest US$ 1.5 billion in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A leading Jordanian investors group led by Dr. Jawad A. Anani of Shaheen Business and Investment Group currently visiting Pakistan has expressed keen interest in Power, Petroleum & Natural Resources, Cement, Tourism, Housing and Gawadar Industrial Estate projects in Pakistan.

The Group leader Dr. Jawad Anani expressed these views in a meeting with Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh Federal Minister for Privatisation & Investment here on Thursday.

Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh said that Pakistan offers unprecedented opportunities to the foreign investors with unmatchable incentives in the region to both the local and the foreign investors with a level playing field. The foreign investors have no restriction on the equity and the repatriation of gains on their business. All ministries and the departments were ready to give full comfort to the investors for smooth functioning of their prospective plans, he said.

He further stated that Pakistan has become a hub of economic activity in the region because of the consistency and continuity of the economic, investment and privatization policies under the dynamic leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

There was a vast scope for the group to participate in the Privatisation Program of Pakistan, which offered the management control of Faisalabad Electric Power Company (FESCO), Jamshoro Power Generation, Pakistan Steel Mills Corporation and Sui Northern and Sui Southern Gas Transmission and Distribution Companies.

The group leader Dr. Jawad Anani informed the Minister that his group intended to invest to the tune of US $ 1.5 billion for establishing 1200 MW Power Plant on Built Operate Own (BOO) basis with PPIB, to lay down 470 KM white oil pipeline extension from Gawadar-Lahore-Rawalpindi-Peshawar, to avail the opportunities in the industry & tourism sectors industrial estate in Gawadar and housing projects in the capital. The group also showed interest in the privatisation process particularly the power generation and gas transmission and distribution sectors.

The Group visited Pakistan in November this year on the invitation of the Prime Minister and their current visit is a follow up of the earlier visit.

The Group is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister and to interact with the Ministries of Water & Power, Communication, Petroleum & Natural Resources, Industries & Productions and Special Initiatives, Tourism, PPIB, Gawadar Development and Capital Development Authorities.
