Pakistan’s Habib beats Tata in low-priced cars

Economy
Now how about competition on the roads

Tata Motors’ McIndica is still on the drawing board, but Pakistan’s Habib Maritime has already announced the launch of its low-cost car, Sitara.

The Sitara has no roof or doors and looks like a golf cart-jeep hybrid. But looks apart, the low cost of the car is likely to make most two-wheeler drivers graduate to a four-wheeler and might spark off a boom in Pakistan’s auto market

Sitara is to include parts almost entirely designed and manufactured locally. The engine is being manufactured in Lahore. The car, which, once fitted with equipment will not exceed 400 kilograms in weight, will have a load-bearing capacity of 250 kilograms. The capacity of the fuel tank will be 10 liters and consumption will be 18 kilometers per liter. The maximum speed allowed will be 60 km/hour.[Rediff]

But the two countries are quite a far away from opening up their roads to each other’s cars. Currently, Pakistan does not even allow import of Indian made tyres, which end up being smuggled across or taken on a long roundabout route.

Please do not generalize when you use the word inferiority complex when speaking of India.

Moreover, the guy who posted the news was dumb not to have researched what Sitara was ??? Sitara is a golf cart, not a Car. Adam's "Revo" is a car.

How can one call Sitara a car when it cant go faster than 60 kph ???

Easy there brotherman,

I think, although you have the right point there, perhaps if you show i little bit patience and gently explain it. I'm pretty sure that our fellow Pakistanis would listen and understand. Its our obligation towards our people that we tackle differences, misconceptions, problems, disagreements and other things with understanding, patience and the care that the one we are talking to is our very countryman! We're Pakistanis here and we can learn to work and understand together, it would only make us stronger!

The owner of Habib motor said that he saw a family on a single motocycle get into an accident and he decided to build some thing that was just as affordible but safer. Its not uncommon to see more than two people on a motocycle on Pakiatani roads. And when they get hit the results are horriffic. I have witnessed such incidents my self, so I applaud Habib's efforts.
I think this is a step in the right direction. Its not a beauty contest its about utility and safety. The sitara has a role cage and seat belts for the passengers.

Sitara and Indica have different type of buyers in mind. There is no basis for a comparison.

no one is comparing the indica and sitara. tata motors have been saying in the past that they are working on a 1 lakh rs car. but they havent been able to introduce it. almost all the other indian car makers are also claiming that they will very soon launch a 1lakh rs quadra-cycle. "quadra-cycle" remember the habib sitara is one. so, in a way we have done it before india. it doesnt mean that we are superior or inferior. and i seriously doubt that the indians will be able to come up with a proper car in 1 lakh.

Maybe the owner of habib motor wants to kill the family all together, first of all you can't call that a car. It dosen't even have a proper roof on it.I don't think it will be road legal. I don't see any safety feature on the cart. I think some member are right it is a golf cart no more than that. People can buy second hand cars under one lakh.

may be u didnt understand what I was trying to say. the intention is for the sitara to be a step forward from the family of five riding on a sigle 100cc motocycle. its not intended to pass any heavy highway test. in a collision it probably wouldnt do all that great but at least the occupants wont go flying at every bum in the road. it does have some safety features like the seat belts and a roll bar (u sould check their website). like i said its a step forward not a solution.

this is the best ur going to get for a lakh, regardless of whatever indian companies have claimed.

World's cheapest car goes on show

The car is designed for family use in India

The unveiling
Tata Motors has unveiled the world's cheapest motor car at India's biggest car show in the capital, Delhi.
The vehicle, called the Tata Nano, will sell for 100,000 rupees or $2,500 (£1,277) and enable those in developing countries to move to four wheels.

The four-door five-seater car, which goes on sale later this year, has a 33bhp, 624cc, engine at the rear.

It has no air conditioning, no electric windows and no power steering, but two deluxe models will be on offer.

See key features that make the Tata Nano so cheap
Tata will initially make about 250,000 Nanos and expects eventual annual demand of one million cars.

The price will be slightly more than the 100,000 once tax and other costs are taken into consideration.

The Nano release comes as India's domestic car market is predicted to soar in the coming years on the back of the country's fast-growing economy and increased consumer wealth.

'People's car'

Indian car sales are predicted to more than quadruple to $145bn by 2016.

Company chairman Ratan Tata said the launch of the Nano was a landmark in the history of transportation.

Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal

Indians get ready for Nano

He said the car was "a safe, affordable and all weather transport - a people's car, designed to meet all safety standards and emissions laws and accessible to all".

Environmental critics have said that the car will lead to mounting air and pollution problems on India's already clogged roads.

But Tata said the car had passed emission standards and would average about 50 miles to the gallon, or five litres per hundred kilometres.

The firm also said it would introduce a diesel version of the Nano at a later date.

'Family transport'

At the unveiling ceremony Mr Tata said: "I observed families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby.

TATA'S NANO
3.1m long, 1.5m wide, 1.6m high
Can seat four to five people
Meets European emission standards
Costs 100,000 rupees ($2,500)
Tata hopes to eventually export the car
Source: AFP

"It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family.

"Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal.

"Today, we indeed have a People's Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions."

Ravi Vangala, of Hyderbad, India, said: "I... congratulate Tata for his dream, and I will definitely buy the Tata Nano car."

Haha, thats what I was thinking.

But the Sitara looks like a decent replacement of Rickshaw, all that is needed a slightly better engine (so it can go at least 80 KM/Hour, or 100 would be even better). If it releases less pollution and is more efficient too, its even better (does anyone know about that?). Or at least we can have our own golf carts....

People have such ficle memories, you should all eat some brain food or something.

You talk of this peice of sh1t from India as if it's the next big thing, well it costs ~2 lakh rupees to make... for 2.9 lakh you can buy a brand new adam revo.

That is made 100% in pakistan and has been in the market for nearly a year.

To be honest folks, just as long as this car is cheap, environmentally friendly, indigenously produced, and somewhat safe - or more so these points than the rickshaw or tanga - who gives a crap what it looks like?

I wonder if this is the end of the rickshaw as we know it? Makes me sad in a nostalgic kind of way - like when you bid your first car that you've had for twelve years a fond farewell. You move onto better things, but that first beauty will always stay in your mind *sigh*

I think its better replacement of 7 on HONDA motorbike. At leas tehy wont be flying in the air when they have crash. Its not abt car nor was it desgined to be bought by some1 rich but it was made for those who can afford motorbike should be able to afford this car and it doesnt take much fuel to chance of fire is also limited in case of a crash.

Who eva said it doesnt have wind shield thus its not safe.

Look at the front end its bascially pushing all the air right above the driver onto the roof thus making is safe for it to be driven. At the same time what kind of Windshield does a motor bike with 7 on them have.

The sitara car is a briliant idea, which was executed less than spectacularly. Now its down wehther the 'Target Market' will buy it or not.

Given our 'Show off' culture, i doubt anyone would want it.

Another problem why this car will most likely fail is because it will not provide the anonymity that comes standard with every car. Hence the idea of saving money by not putting doors is a real bad one from a social and phycological perspective of the buyer.

I Say cover the same car up, use fiber glass panels (not the high quality super car ones) to give it some kind of shape, keep the insides the same and it will sell. Even for a bit of permium over current price.

the next thing you know is that 15 people are riding in as sitarta.

Honestly though this is really good for the environment, safety(as far as many people not riding on a motor cycle), and money wise. It will reduce a lot of noise too. How many people would rather ride in this rather than a rickshaw? I know i wouldnt mind. Also if these get replaced with all the rickshaws, today pollution would go down a lot!

Is that SITARA than it looks alrite and no offence but those people who are amking fuss abt it should realised for hte purpose it was desgined and the price limit it was done for, its great car and now offence, i rather see people travelling in this than on bikes with 7 othrs.

let me list down few use of this car

- can Replace all the tangas in country side, infact it could be cost effective for them, though initial investment will be high.

- Can be used by business especially MILK delivery guys normall they have 4 or so drums on their motorbike, and this would be great replacemnet of it, and they can carry more.

- Ofcourse replace motor bike for big family who normally travel on bike.

Thats the thing, it has great potiential for what it is and especially shape is what makes it worthwhile, ive list abt 3 above. again it give riskshaw drives more capaicty in terms of pessenger carriage and better speed. However, im not sure if it is on CNG if it is than another great thing abt it. BTW riskshaws in PAK use CNG now days.

As for 15 riding, wel lthat is failure of government in implementing against it. Motorbikers might have excuse but with this car and that too in the range of motorbike price should not have any excuse to carry more than the seats.
