Tehran rules out discount on gas
TEHRAN, June 21: Iran will not sell its gas at knock-down rates to India and Pakistan, a senior oil official said on Wednesday amid a pricing dispute in talks over a planned pipeline.

“The price suggested by India and Pakistan is almost half of the price we offered,” deputy oil minister Mohammad-Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian said on state radio.

“If the two governments intend to subsidise their domestic gas, there is no reason for Iran to pay this subsidy,” he added.

The Iran-Pakistan-India gas project envisages a pipeline of about 2,600 kilometres that would help meet South Asia’s growing energy needs.

Quoted by the Iranian oil ministry’s Shana news agency, Nejad-Hosseinian said Iran was not desperate to sell its gas to India and Pakistan.

“The tripartite Peace Pipeline agreement is not an absolute obligation,” he said.

He also warned India and Pakistan that if the nuclear issue is resolved, other countries “will be the first customers of our gas (and will pay) even better prices.”

The official said there was also disagreement with India and Pakistan over the amount of gas to be exported.—AFP

Thats alright. Im used to iran messing pakistan around, because thy know our pakistani goverment are useless full of s.... . Not even american policy makers could have dreamed this up regarding there oppostions to this pipe.I was sceptical frm the start regarding this pipes success ,iran i feel has played pakistan like a whore all those times pakistan jumping up and down defending using the term brother iran and its nuclear programme .Iran shia s untrustworhty like there compatriats in iraq ,afghanistan

Man please don't sell us gas if just dealing with us is so annoying. There are another two gas pipelines from Turkemanistan and Qatar that international financiers are probably more inclined to invest in.

lol, they'll probably change their mind(s) when the 'time' comes. Otherwise what they did to the Iraqi Air Force during the first U.S-Iraq war is what we'll do them (take possession of the aircraft that enter our borders).

pakistan's economy is growing so quickly we cannot increase production to keep pace. thats why we need to import gas. In fact we have a shortfall of around 10% per annum.

This is normal business practise, just done in an unprofessional manner by blurting it out loud over the tabloids. Pakistan-India are trying to screw Iran for the gas price over the US threats, Iran is trying to counter that by suggesting that the threat is less than percieived and that a solution is on the way and thus want to bargain by suggesting they have other customers who offer better prices, simple soda-baazi.

The same way the recent Iraq issue was resolved?

This is the type of ignorance which destroys people. Its their resource, let them set the price however they want.

It's their gas, not ours. They can charge whatever price they want to. I say take it right now because in the future when Iran has resolved the nuclear issue (this thing isn't going to last forever), many European nations will be offering twice or three time the price for the gas. For those who want to see Iran get taken over by the US, join the US army and go fight for Uncle Sam instead of venting heat on this forum. If Pakistan doesn't take it right now, we'll have a critical energy shortage in the future along with having to pay a much higher fee for the gas.

Everyone who wrote that Iran has a right to sell gas at a higher price is totally correct. Furthermore, anyone who thinks that the US Iran conflict is going to be solved via a war, I don't know where they have been for the last three years. If the US could solve this with weapons, they would never have gone the diplomatic way. That is not the way of the Bush administration. Additionally, Iran and its people are NOT stupid. In many ways, they are much smarter than Pakistan. They have a functioning democracy, certified by the UN and US watchdogs (like Jimmy Carter's orgnazation). Their literacy rate is comparable to advanced western nations and they are a highly educated country. Their government and industries are investing in high tech, like nanotechnology, while our universities are still building good websites.

I don't mean to say that Pakistan is stupid or wholly inferior, but we must give credit where credit is due. What we read in the western media about how Iranians are all disenchanted with their government, etc, is really biased. Proof? If Iranians are so hateful of their system of governance, then why did 67% of eligible voters (this percentage was tallied by international monitors) vote in the last national elections? If people were so fed up with the government, they would do what Americans and Britons do, not show up to vote.

Indeed, Pakistan has many wonderful accomplishments for which we should all be proud. But it is really sad when people disparage and malign an entire nation over a business deal in which all parties have a right to bargain as they see fit. If and when Pakistan sells something to Iran, lets see if Pakistan sells the product at whatever price the Iranians want.
