Punjab govt inked bipartite agreement to set up sport city in Lahore LAHORE: Punjab government singed a bipartite agreement with the construction company of personality in the world of sports Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, in order to set up a sports city of International standard over an area of 3000 acres in Lahore.
Chief Minister, Ch. Pervaiz Elahi also attended the ceremony held at Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Friday.
The sports city will be the first project of its kind in South Asia, to be undertaken with an investment of Rs.120 billion.
According to the agreement, construction work on this project would start immediately while installation of sports equipment in the city will be completed during next four years.
Speaking at the function, Ch. Pervaiz Elahi said that such a huge investment by a leading international figure like Abdul Rahman Bukhatir in sports city in Punjab is a historic event and reflective of the faith of foreign investors in President General Pervez Musharraf as well as Punjab government.
He said that after completion of this project, Commonwealth Games and other international sports competitions could be held in the sports city which will also result in increase in tourist activities in Punjab as well as the whole country.
He said that there is extraordinary talent in the field of sports in Pakistan but due to inadequate training facilities it could not be fully exploited.
However, he said, after setting up of sports city, this talent will be fully utilized and our players will be able to make their mark at international level. He said that sports city project will give an impetus to economic activities in Punjab and generate lakhs of job opportunities.
Speaking on the occasion, Abdul Rahman Bukhatir said that besides separate stadiums for football, hockey, cricket, tennis and other sports, ten thousand houses will also be constructed in the proposed sports city which will provide residential facilities to two lakh people.
He said that in addition to sports facilities, the sports city will also gain an international status due to training and educational facilities regarding different games. He said that this project will provide revenue of 12 to 13 billion rupees to Pakistan government in the form of taxes during the first four years.
The meeting was informed that this sports city will be three times larger in area than the sports city of Dubai and two thousand persons are being hired as labour force for this project. It was further informed that that shopping plazas for the sale of spots items will also be constructed in the sports city which will increase exports of sports goods produced in Pakistan.
