KARACHI: The survey for Allah Din Port – the fourth modern seaport of the country to be established at Sonmiani Bay, in Balochistan province, 75km west of Karachi, has been started.

Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri and Karachi Port Trust Chairman Vice Admiral Ahmed Hayat on Wednesday took an aerial view of the Sonmiani Bay.

President Gen Pervez Musharraf shall perform stone laying ceremony of the port by the end of this year. The project aims to develop the first coastal city in Balochistan with business, housing, industrial and industrial development opportunities.

Yes, I still do not have a clue who came up with this name, it seems to be official. May be somebody can have some better explanation.

Apart from the stupid name, I am against this port. Sure it will help the economy, but this port will have an adverse ecological impact on the Mangroves at Sonmiani Bay. Already Pakistan is facing massive amount of deforestation, which according to IUCN's estimate is among the highest in the world. Our country only has 3.4% of our land under forest cover and this port will destroy the last remaining tract of coastal forest in Pakistan. This government is the biggest anti-environment establishment in our history. How can they just start every damn project without carrying out any kind of feasibility study. First they approved the Diamond Bar City in Karachi that is going to destroy the Mangroves on Bundal and Budho Islands and now this. Truly it's a shame that we will loose the 6th largest mangroves (and the largest in the dry region) in a decade. And we still haven't understood the impact this loss will have on the marine life The government needs to shift the location of this port somewhere else (either to Gidani, Jawani, e.t.c)

Its not sense of humor if the humor has to be defined. But would you like to tell your child Allah din ka chiragh story or Allah din port story.

I agree. The ecological impact must be taken into account. Ports and harbours can be built in many suitable locations. But mother earth has chosen only a few area for her treasures. Sometimes I shudder to think of the world we are leaving for our future generations.

Keti Bandar as port option under study

KARACHI (April 10 2007): The Ministry of Ports and Shipping is also considering Keti Bandar as a full-fledged future port in line with the ports expansion strategy to meet the growing demand of the country's cargoes. "We are also working on the feasibility of Keti Bandar as an active future port and, after its final report, the Ministry would take decision."

Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri said at a ceremony to distribute motorcycles to the staff of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) here on Monday. He said that PNSC would purchase three more ships. Of these, two would be oil tankers and one bulk carrier. The Corporation has been directed to purchase all three vessels before November 16 this year, he added.

Keeping in mind the hardships faced by low-income staff of PNSC, the Ministry provides motorcycles on easy instalments to 22 workers. Earlier, Ghauri said that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has approved the business plan for a modern Sonmiani Port for which ground-breaking would be performed this year. The business plan was presented by the Ministry of Port and Shipping to start initial work on the fourth port project.

The fourth destination for commercial cargo handling--Allah Din Port--was announced earlier by President Pervez Musharraf during the inaugural ceremony of Gwadar Port in March. According to the business plan, the government has decided to declare tax-free city at Sonmiani that also includes modern tourist's resorts, universities, hospitals, and leisure facilities. Another feature of the Sonmiani port is a fishermen village that would be converted into a modern village and improve their living standards.

The government also decided to build a city equipped with all facilities first and at later stage other projects would be initiated. Sonmiani Bay Island is a beautiful beach with sufficient space to develop a modern coastal port city for business, tourists and industrial project which is located in Balochistan about 75 kilometres west of Karachi.

Earlier, in his address of welcome, PNSC Chairman Vice Admiral Tauqir Hussain Naqvi said that the Corporation had lifted three general cargoes from Kandla Port (India) and two oil consignments. The Corporation was unable to lift more Indian cargoes due to non-availability of vessels, "but it's a big achievement for the corporation".
