KARACHI, April 24 (APP)- An Italian engineering and technical University will be established in Karachi. This was announced by Prof. Bernardino Chiala, Vice Rector for Education Programmes, Politecnico Di Torino, at a briefing at a local hotel on Tuesday.

The Consul General of Italy in Karachi, Domenico Beninocasa, was also present on the occasion.

Prof. Chiala said that in this connection Politecnico Di Torino, which is the first technical university in Italy and ranked seventh in Europe, has signed an agreement with the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

He stated that the Karachi campus would be ready by the end of 2009 and that by October 2008 the masters’ classes would start at its provisional campus located at the Marine Academy in Karachi.

The Campus, Prof. Chiala pointed out, would be located at a land measuring about 1,300 acres and in this area the universities of France and South Korea would also be housed.

He informed that five Italian universities with Politecnico in the lead, have formed a consortium for the setting up of the Karachi campus of the Italian University.

Prof. Chiala said that our vision for the Karachi campus embraces a strong focus on technology transfer.

He stated that a big technology park comprising privately owned company research centres and an incubator for the innovative high-tech companies will be hosted in the campus and coordinated by the other two universities- the French and the South korean.

Prof. Chiala was optimistic that this will help improve the level of engineering education in Pakistan and that this will also attract the Italian companies to benefit from the good-quality labour force here at a reasonable cost.

He also pointed out that the Italian government strongly supports the initiative of the establishment of the Italian University in Karachi.

About the administrative set up, it was pointed out that the Chancellor of the University will be from Italy whereas there will be two Vice Rector each from Italy and Pakistan.

Initially, there will be more faculty members from Italy and as the Pakistani teachers assume the responsibility the number of the Italians would decrease gradually.

The bachelors’ course would be of three years and that of masters of two years.

In 10 years’ time, as many as 4,000 students would be enrolled and that there would also be a programme of exchange of students.

Javed Masood of the HEC also spoke on the occasion and said that this university will help enhance the level of engineering education in Pakistan.

He said that eight other universities are also being set up in Pakistan with foreign collaboration.

Similar consultations are going on with Germany and France as well. These universities will produce high quality technocrats for the nation.
HEC is doing a great job of improving standard of higher education.
We also have to keep in mind the fact that the raw material for these universities has to come from secondary schools and colleges. It is therefore equally important to spend money on improving the basic education in Pakistan.

What would be the medium of communication in the University?

Well in another sense the minority who would attend these universities (they number in the millions) do increase the number of skilled Pakistanis. It also helps prevent the government from sending off good students to universities abroad - only to never return. I do agree however that the government should subsidize university education to those who deserve it and cannot afford it...better to spend the money there than bullet proof cars and giant mansions.

How do you know that it would cost 10 lakhs?

As for lums, the number of people who apply there is far greater then the number that get in, so that says something about that.

yes, education is the responsibility of the government however, you have to see the government doesn't have a magic wand or something that it can use to get money from nowhere. Just like we don't expect Pakistani Government to provide free healthcare [I don't mean on paper but in reality], eradicate poverty etc you have to see there is a limit to what can be given a certain level of resources... Takes time.

Whenever the govt decides to set up a university, industry, or hold an important event, it is sure to be either in Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad. I wonder if Pâkistan is restricted to these three cities. Other parts of Pakistan also need to be addressed.
