Unlimited 1mbit connection per month = 4999 rupees.
What about upload speed??
4999 rupees is aprox. 499 dKr.
Let me show you an example of a normal (priced) provider in Denmark:
8064/512 kbit/s 434 dKr = 4340 rupees.
(In Sweden it is way cheaper.)
I have two points, the second one being most important:
1. It is WAAAY to expensive!!
2. It is WAAAY to expensive for Pakistanis living and earning in rupees!!
I know the prices will get down in the future, but this isn't anything good nor acceptable yet.

Malaysia have exectly same package, but
NOW prices are just a bit lower then PTCL package, not much different.
But once the PTCL goes in to broadband business the prices would ultimatley go down, infact I have seen this advertisement few days back and it is quite reasonable, i am paying RS. 2,000 (approximately) in Malaysia for unlimited 1 mgbt package, it started much higher but as the provider made profits the charges were lowered.
At this point PTCL package seems to be reasonable in business point of view, hopefully there are more service providers so that prices fall quickly.

Bhai mere , the problem is infrastructure. You wont get any speed at all if your line has noise. Which is a common problem is most of the areas.
10 MB thing is a Joke. Maybe its the speed of their Backbone.

Broadband is a vital area for investment like electricity, telephone and drinking water. Broadband is very important for the business community world over today. More and more firms do marketing on Internet and people use email. Pakistan cant lack behind and pakistani establishment has noticed that.
In my oppinion broadband prices are little overpriced in comparison to average pakistani income, but i belive it will get cheaper after some years. We havnt heard anymore about the Wateen WiMax that was announced som etime back. Anybody know the broadband price with Wateen WiMax ?
In Norway broadband prices for the private market is like, not for commercial, other prices and packages for industrial use:
1 Norwegian crone is 10,5 pak rps
1500/300 kbps 3588 kr/annualy or 299 kr/month
Basis 2500/350 kbps 4188 kr/annualy or 349 kr/month
Pluss 4000/400 kbps 5028 kr/annualy or 419 kr/month
Ekstra 6000/500 kbps 5988 kr/annualy or 499 kr/month
Max 16000/700 kbps 6588 kr/annualy or 549 kr/month

In beganing the prices would be higher to cover the operation costs and lower number of users.
With increase in users prices would ultimately go down, Malaysian Telecom Corporation is one of the example in developing world, they started broad band at very high prices, today it have been reduced to 1/5 th, and today their telephone bussiness is going in to loss while a strong base of broadband is covering telephone losses and giving them huge profits.
Presently we have around 506-60 million users of internet services (if i am correct), suppose PTCL is able to get 20 million users in next two years with average of Rs. 2,000, it would be more then their present revenues, with such huge income they would be able to make phone more cheaper and lower broadband prices as well.
And basic thing is having broadband available bring in cheap communication, more busiess, easir access to online date, banking, services..........you name anything.

Dont compare it with Denmark, compare it with your neighbour who is our compitiion. as soon as reading this i asked my Indian co-worker, who moved to india and works for same company as i do, he is paying 900/month for unlimited.
now thats a huge difference.

Actually that quota set is quite common in some of the major European nations and around the world.
Here in England my 5 Mbit is PKR 2410/month, but that's with unlimited downloading.
It's a good start for Pakistan. With increased privatization the competition will increase and this will mean good news for the Pakistani consumers. It's one of the reasons why I love the Musharraf government.

Guys its the begining of broadband in pakistan, its a fact that whenever the new things get introduced they are expensive, remember paktel? my dad got a huge brick at that time from them for Rs80,000 if i had that phone right now i may have to give money to someone just to take it away
As for broadband i remember some years back i use to pay £30 for 256kb on aol now i am paying £20 for 8mb unlimited, some companies are offering good packages like £30 for unlimited local call tv and broadband for that price.Anyone living in uk would know that ptcl is like BT in uk they provide everything but still are one of the most expensive. I am sure as the time would go and more companies would come in the prices would drop.

LOl................speedy, you would have seen that big box and a phone attached with it, it was around 5 KG in weight and you need a person to carry it alongwith you, the starting price was from 250,000-150,000.
Then these Nokia sets, lol..............for 30-50 thousands and on Paktel.
With this much big market of 60 plus million people today and increasing rapidly, we would see in a cople of years the broad band would be around few hundreds, but to be honest, if I have to pay even 2,000 for this good speed sitting in my villege, I dont mind it as long as its accessable.
You know the most expensive thing is which is not accessable for developing world.

10 mbps is 10$ in korea...
PLUS you get a live IP...
and so many fringe benefits, that I never bothered to read the list..
On top of it all, you call, and with in 1 hour, you have the service, with 1 year free service as a compliment

These are not cables here, rather PIPES!

Besides PTCL, there are others who offer it a bit cheaper, but there connections arent very fast. If youre in defence (karachi) you can get Cable net for about 1400 rs, its better then dial up and its kinda fast. Average for Cable net through out the city is about 500 rs (very slow), so their prices do make some sense.

I am not sure the speed of backbone in Pakistan. They can advertise 1M or 100M , until unless proper infrastructure is present, the actual speed would be much lesser. Secondly, if you are talking about twisted pair (ethernet/DSL) , the max can be as much as 100M. I remember 7/8 years back, there was a start of cable(coaxial) networking but later somebody told me that cable didn't work out.
I think the prices are not that high up, specially for businesses but there is a need to go beyond DSL. I think PTCL should try to invest in fibre optic infrastructure , starting with Karachi , Lahore.

there are a lot of backbones, backbone doesnt matter in our case....every network have their own backbone, and their all multiple 10gig fibre...the problem is our pipeline to the rest of the world...demand for internet has been skyrocketing over past 5 years, and pipeline has not been growing at the same pace...i expect the situation should improve next year as demand is due to fall because of the economic crises bought upon us by the new government...
