India will beat China in 2 years: Mukesh Ambani

October 29, 2005 11:06 IST

Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani on Friday said India will overtake China in GDP growth rate within the next two years.

"I believe that over the next two years...2006 or 2007, India will surpass China in terms of its annual GDP growth rate and consistently maintain that," he said in an address on the occasion of the 32nd Foundation Day of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

This would be a historic moment, he said. "For 15-20 years, we have been talking only about China. I am telling you by the time you enter the real world (professional career), India would have absolute potential to surpass China. Not only that, over the next two decades...(India will be ahead of China)".

Noting that when he joined Reliance around 25 years back, opportunities for young people were limited, he said: "In 25 years, things have transformed and today, India is becoming one with the world.

"You can switch your career paths without a sense of anxiety," he told the students, pointing out that he, a chemical engineer, built infocomm business in the year 2000.

"There is excitement in the air", Ambani, who is the chairman of Board of Governors of IIMB, said.

"Unlimited opportunities loom large on the horizon. That does not mean that the path ahead is easy. In fact, it's going to be full of challenges," he cautioned and exhorted the students to continuously renew knowledge and competency, nurture a global mindset and learn to adapt to different social and cultural environments.

Mr. MUkesh Ambani was simply trying give words to the aspiration of Indians . It is not impossible to bridge the gap of 9.2 % and 1pprox. 10.5 % , annual GDP growth figures of India and China, especially when China is trying hard to cool down its economy.

What' wrong in dreaming big ?

I think it is worhwile mentioning this weeks economist issue. They talk about the Indian economy overheating and inflation getting out of control. They refer to the Indian economy as very fragile and setting itself up for a big crach in the cmooing years. If the Chinese economic growth has slowed down in recent years it is because they have intentionally increased their interest rates to keep the economy from overheating and to control their inflation rates.

I agree with everyone else that the Indians are far behind the chinese and there is no sign that they will catch up soon.

So what you're saying is India can only catch up China when China tries to cool down its economy, otherwise that goal is out of reach for India ??

Sorry I am not obsessed. I am just very annoyed by these stupid, clueless articles. And I am just trying to show people here that Indians are really good at many types of service, call centre service and most importantly lip service.

This years projection for growth for India is 10 % , hence diffence is not much gap left . As regards Chine , there is no denial that Chinese economy is approx. three times the size of Indian economy and having great momentum , we are trying to follow it. There is nothing wrong, everybody in this world follow the person ahead of him.

I reckon this should be put in other forum threads why because i do not want this to become a smackdown thread i.e Ind vs Pakistan.

Sometime some of you guys keeps me amazed the way they start the topic, what is more surprising is how much are they obsessed with everything to do with India, how much track one have to keep to find and follow some negative news and stories about India and can post it here to make everyones day, how much time is required to research some negative news and things about India, and for that your focus is been about India or Indian all the time, one have to be extremely smart to pick up on smallest mistakes or any level of negativity found and make it it a issue about India.

The problem with India, at this point of time they are experiencing things that they did not dream of in last 50 years, suddenly there is a change of air, they are more ambitious then ever, they want to achieve things fast especially when they have realized there own potential, they dream of big things, and see every step as a challenge to achieve it, they look at the counries that is better then them and keep goal to match then or over take then (China plays a very important part, firstly as nabiour country which is far more developed then India itself and also China is a model for India on open economy, we share commen thing like huge and cheap labour for example, we are obsessed with the progreass of China and we dream to match it and possiblely over take it, and its only a goal which India is focused on, I see no problem in thinking big, as saying goes you dream, you acheive, you don't dream, you don't acheive)

Fact is India is way behind Chine, this is been discussed number of time in various treads, India has dream (you may call it wet dream) and they are working for it, looking at different avenue’s and opportunity to make it come true.

Bottom line is, the amount of time you put to find negative things about India, be so obsessed with things happening in India the same amount of time can be devoted for the development of Pakistan, to do something that can make difference to your country and country man in some positive way. Let India have there wet dream, what difference does it make to your lives, Nothing, what weight age your opinion have over India’s progress or down fall of that country, make no difference to your live, but your good doing for Pakistan will make difference to your country and your community.
