Lahore Allama Iqbal airport ranked world’s leading airport

Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, is ranked among the world's leading airports in service performance, a latest survey by Singapore Airlines revealed.

The intensive Service Performance Survey (SPS) was conducted recently by Singapore Airlines to assess the quality of service standards being maintained by the airports within the region.

The survey entailed a stringent evaluation of airports on the basis of lounge facilities offered in terms of general airport condition, ambience, and comfort of lounge as well as overall efficiency of the airports' lounge staff with respect to their level of friendliness and assistance extended to all travellers and visitors of the airports.

Airports were assessed and evaluated by Singapore Airlines for the Service Performance Survey (SPS) included 18 leading airports from all across the world including UAE's Abu Dhabi Airport, Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Airport, United Kingdom's Campbell Town Airport, Pakistan's Allama Iqbal International and Jinnah International Airports, India's Bombay, Calcutta, Chennai and Delhi airports, Sri Lanka's Colombo Airport, South Africa's Cape Town and Johannesburg Airports alongwith Bangladesh's Dhaka Airport and the Malee Airport.

Following a rigorous scrutiny and evaluation of these airports by the representatives from the Singapore Airlines, Pakistan's Allama Iqbal International Airport, and the Lahore airport secured the first position with a score ranging from 87 percent to 100 percent in the different fields outlined by the airline as part of the survey criteria. "In an age where knowledge, innovation and advancements have paved the way for unprecedented growth and opportunities, adaptation to change was a critical element that would help us keep pace with the changing dynamics of airport management," said CAA director general.

We recognize the need to ensure effective and an efficient management of our airports in line with the global benchmarks and, therefore, feel great pride over this achievement, he added.

Following is the overall ranking of lounge facilities:

1) Lahore 94.44
2) Jeddah 79.19
3) Cape Town 74.94
4) Male 69.49
5) Campbell Town 68.48
6) Colombo 67.74
7) Karachi 64.14
8) Istanbul 61.87
9) Kolkata 61.14
10) Delhi 59.57
11) Johannesburg 56.38
12) Dubai 56.17
13) Chennai 52.79
14) Abu Dhabi 52.77
15) Dhaka 40.28

Clearly there is something wrong with that report if Lahore is beating out Dubai and Abu Dhabi .... and where the hell are the others like Riyadh? (worlds largest airport) HongKongs and other engineering marvels?
platinum786
no there is nothing wrong, it just goes to show what a good airport it is to land at.
Tarbela
Good. CAA should be given credit for it.

Not really. The new airport is clean and tidy, and has beautiful Mughal-influenced architecture.

You can land in Lahore from Manchester and be out of the door - that's immigration and baggage - in 12 minutes. No joke. I actually timed it when I went two months ago. It's not a huge airport, but then, it doesn't need to be. Regarding staff efficiency and helpfulness (yes, this is Pakistan we're talking about!), I was surprised and pleased.

Abu Dhabi airport is a joke. I went earlier this year, and as an international airport of the capital of a country, it is sorely disappointing. It consists of nothing but a circular over-croweded room, and it took me a whole minute to navigate it in search of the bathroom before I realised there was *shock horror* a ground floor too!

Actually thinking about it, one thing they could do to increase the airport's ranking even more is improve the surrounding scenery. The runaway is amid dry and yellow vegetation, and the car park is a bit of an eye-sore too. Something along the lines of Abu Dhabi's palm trees, and clearly de-lineated roads would be good.

No, I've been to all of them (out of the ones you mentioned, except Riyadh) and I would have to say Lahore airport without a doubt would beat any in the world.

Ya it takes like 10 minutes no joke. As soon as you get off the plane and to when you get out of those doors, 10 minutes. It takes like 30 minimum at any airport in any Western country. Plus it takes hardly anytime to check in as well. Not to mention the place is beautiful. Amazing airport, I wish there were more like it.

Nice job finding them, but those pictures don't show how amazing it really is, its actually quite hard to show it in pictures.

I disagree. Considering the pictures lack the one thing that would give a bad impression (i.e. Pakistanis) they give a pretty good idea of the airport.

Thats honesty. And I agree. LOLANI.GIF

But what I meant was, it doesn't show the amazing service (10 minutes and your out) that you get there.

But a problem is that it is very hot in Pak. So didn't have time to enjoy the view.

Great news. To be ranked no. 1 in the region is amazing. Also, Karachi is no.7 so two of Pakistan's airport in the top 10 is a good feat. The staff should be appreciated for their hard work.

I would disagree. Not because of pride itself, but the service is 100x better at Lahore's airport (service including the attitudes of the people there, the efficiency, etc.). Plus the lay out is so much better at Allama Iqbal (you get out faster, less crowded, etc.). Architecturally, the Allama Iqbal is better also (thought that one is just an opinion).

AND ANOTHER FACT AIRLINE OF THE YEAR 2007---> SINGAPORE AIRLINES
Singapore airlines and its airport is on top of almost every list...they have one heck of a service
_kiLLuminati_
The service is the only thing I find better in AIA Lahore. There is less volume at AIA, thats why you get out quicker, just like the old Lahore airport.

I think Dubai's airport looks much better (the interior) & its like a giant mall inside, and lots of nice international babes roaming around.
Tarbela
Indeed a beautiful airport.

On one hand Lahore airport is world standard (so they say) and then you have the state of the art Islamabad airport where they have red pots with brunt plants which line the entrance to the terminal which feel like landing straight into the 1950s in North Korea, why not try and make half decent airport in capital city before advertising such news, Islamabad airport is such a joke its not even funny anymore.

I have been to Riyadh's King Khaled Int'l Airport quite a few times, and honestly, I haven't been impressed. They truly lack sophisitication and efficiency. Personally, I think Lahore Airport is the best in those regards.

Common guys get over it ... well its a pretty decent airport but don't go on to call it the best. Coming out in 10 mins is because we hardly handle 10percent of the flights what the other airports we are comparing handle. Well as Pakistanis we are used to that customer service by the staff especially the lower grade but it wont be the same if some westerner comes. Get their openion and it will be different. Dont belive me ... read these passenger openions....

17 July 2007 Customer Rating : 3 Star Rating

My flight from Chicago landed me at Lahore airport. Lahore airport new appearance is pleasing. However, customer service element was missing from every angle, or perhaps my expectations were too high. There was only one international flight at the time so immigration process was a breeze, but again pleasant side of good PR was no where to be found. At baggage claim I was stormed by porters who wanted to help me with my luggage. I was lucky to get away from them, but passed security, my luck ran out and suddenly some stranger was pushing my luggage without my permission, at that point I knew I had lost the battle. To be honest, after 18 hours of flight you barely have any strength left to fight anybody, so to make things go smoother, I suggest immediate surrender - it would definitely make your moments of reunion somewhat pleasant. Fancy building, modern roads and highways reflect progress, but we all know true progress occurs when we are mentally and intellectually progressed.

Lahore International Dull, but lovely. I have passed through many times, both domestic and international, and checkin /immigration and always quick, and the airport is clean and quite relaxing. There is, however, nothing to see or do, and they seem to have dispensed with those waiters that offer you tea and cake that all other Pakistani airports have. Strangely, the one TV I saw last time I was there was showing WWE wrestling; most odd.

I travelled to Lahore Club class by PIA and found their Club class facilities at the airport a bare minimal and dull. The only difference between the Economy class and the Club class facilities was the segregation between the two. The airport still lacks shops etc. I learnt from the few shop owners there that the rents that the authority charges for the shop premises are phenomenally high.

The Architect has done an excellent job by designing a building which goes with the speciality of the City - Culture, especially the outer side. In contrast, the inner part has a much newer and modern look. The airport by itself has a star-rated approach but the staff is insufficient and above all inefficient. The immigration officers are slow. Lack of a quality Duty Free and Restaurants puts a negative point.

I spent one hour there before the flight to Islamabad on 20thOctober. The airport is clean, spacious and staff in the snack-bar friendly. Very refreshing experience in the contrast with the tragically painful Islamabad airport.

I arrived at the new terminal in Oct '03, the place is very smart. The new security is so slow, one hour to clear 400 travellers! Security guys were friendly and apologetic. Facilities in short supply and expensive.

Check in was easy even though you have to OPEN your bags there for the customs! Departure lounge lacks any good food outlets. The only shop in the lounge had sub standard stuff at sky high prices. Over all I rate the airport as brilliant but people working there still need a lot of training in customer service!

Lahore airport was small but neat. It's not that old shabby airport but still this airport needs alot of things like when 2 flights land in the same hour it will get hours to clear immigration. It's a hell for a transit traveller like it has no duty free, no entertainment and even PIA's lounge is not good. I think, Lahore airport should be expanded as it has the attributes to become a major airport in the region. Right now less than 15 flights are flown from Lahore daily. By expanding, Lahore airport can do a lot of business.

Lahore Airport by M S Sheikh

28 January 2004

Year 2003 brought me a much looked for pleasant experience of landing at the new Lahore airport. It was a breath of fresh air. The airport is modern and spacious. Let us hope that it is not only kept like that but improves with time. However, long queues at check ins were tiring, due to too few check in positions /inefficient staff. There were almost no shops in the waiting areas. When I inquired about the lack of shops I was told that there were very few takers as the rents etc were too high. I have heard that the landing charges etc at Pakistan airports are one of the highest in the world. If true I wonder why. Perhaps the decision makers in Pakistan cannot see beyond their noses. They consider direct income from the airport as the real and only income. They don't seem to appreciate that making Pakistan airports attractive and inexpensive will bring a lot more money directly and indirectly.

Lahore Airport by Shayaan Nadeem

28 December 2003

The New Lahore Airport definitely contrasts positively from its dilapidated predecessor. The old airport lacked everything one could now find in other major world-class airports. Despite the cleanliness and refurbished appearance of the Allama Iqbal Terminal, our CAA has let us down. There is an obvious lack of amenities and a shortage of space. During the busiest hours of departure, the terminal is packed with people and the check-in hall can give a person a feeling of claustrophobia. In the international departures, the immigration hall is deplorably small. Clearly, there is inadequate space at the airport to accommodate for the increasing number of both International and Domestic air travellers. The airport lacks in space for passengers AND parking gates for aircraft. Of course, the current air-traffic of our city does not require a massive airport, but the expected increase in air travel will definately have to see an expansion of the parking facilities. Already, there is often the need to park aircraft in their remote parking areas rather than near the terminal (with the boarding 'ramps'). There are three boarding ramps dedicated to International flights, and three to Domestic flights. One ramp may be used for either. Another closely-related flaw is that there are very few baggage claims in both the International and Domestic terminals. Sure, i haven't had a problem with my luggage at the airport YET, but this inconvenience MAY soon become apparent if traffic increases. Lahore is, after all, a city quickly developing to attract tourists. As Mr. O. Khan said, there are no discernable CIP lounges and there is a shortage of amenities (airside). No duty-free shops, no entertainment. A literal torture chamber for transit passengers! Apart from this blunt criticism of the airport, I must admit that it has changed air-travel at least a bit for Lahorites. We can now come home to a presentable, well-lit and airy airport rather than the dingy and tastelessly-built old airport. An overall improvement and a clear full-hearted effort (the CAA did the best they could given the resources at their disposal), the Allama Iqbal International Airport of Lahore, Pakistan is a destination to look forward to in itself, which incorporates the city's vast culture and Mughal heritage. Hats off to the architect and the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority).

Lahore Airport by O Khan

10 December 2003

Using indigenous materials and architectural details, the airport is clean, airy and bright, with plenty of marble and local art. It has spotless restrooms, a huge waiting area, and easy access. Both arrival and departure are quick and painless. Negatives include limited amenities airside, such as shops and restaurants and no discernible CIP lounges.
