NEW DELHI, Jan 10 (AFP) - An Indian naval submarine on a routine mission collided with a cargo ship in the Arabian Sea off Pakistan, officials said Thursday, adding that there were no reports of casualties. The 2,500-ton INS Sindhughosh, with a crew of 53, sustained only “superficial damage” to its conning tower, Indian navy spokesman Nirad Sinha said.
However, according to naval officials who asked not to be named, the vessel was seriously damaged. The navy declined to comment on the extent of damage to the merchant vessel or reveal its current whereabouts. The submarine has been towed to a naval dockyard at Mumbai. It was submerged and had its radars off and periscope down when it slammed into the ship off India's Diu island, 70 nautical miles from Pakistani waters.
Last year, a 450-ton Indian navy patrol ship sank off India's Goa state after ramming a merchant carrier, prompting a massive mission to rescue 73 crew members from the Arabian Sea.

However, according to naval officials who asked not to be named, the vessel was seriously damaged. The navy declined to comment on the extent of damage to the Cayman-registered merchant vessel or reveal its current whereabouts.

“The ship MV Leeds Castle was in restricted waters and in that area the depth is not much and hence the mishap,” the spokesman said. The submarine has been towed to a naval dockyard at the western Indian city of Mumbai.

The naval officials said the submarine was submerged and had its radars off and periscope down when it slammed into the ship off India’s Diu island, 400 nautical miles from Mumbai.

Diu lies 70 nautical miles from Pakistani waters.

The collision came just after naval intelligence received alerts of possible strikes against its warships off Pakistan, naval sources said. afp

They had their equipments off and the fact Pakistan might have taken a shot at it, suggest they were up to some fishy business and luck for them it was a cargo ship and not some turpedo from PN.

India refuses upgraded submarines from Russia: Report

January 11, 2008 21:34 IST
Last Updated: January 11, 2008 21:57 IST
On the heels of the deadlock over the pricing of Russian aircraft carrier Gorshkov, India has refused to take delivery of the latest submarine INS Sindhuvijay from Russia [Images], saying its cruise missile had not performed up to parameters.
The Navy refused to take delivery of the Sindhuvijay, which completed refit at a shipyard near St Petersburg [Images], after its missiles failed to find their targets in six consecutive test firings, the India Today reported.

The pre-delivery test firings were carried out between September and November.

"The 50-man crew sent to Russia to sail back with the submarine is set to return to India, with the Naval brass taking a stern line by asking the shipyard to rectify the problem, before it takes delivery of the sub," the magazine said.

The land attack cruise missile flies over 300 km and delivers a 400 kg warhead to its target with pinpoint accuracy.

Naval officials said it would take another year to rectify the defects and prove it in firing trials.

In a contract signed in 2001, India had sent ten Kilo class submarines to Russia for upgradation to make them capable of firing the Klub class land attack cruise missiles.

Sindhuvijay was only the second Indian submarine to be fitted with land attack variants of the missiles. India had purchased 28 Klub class missiles, worth Rs 844 crores, from Russia in 2006. Anti-ship variants of the missiles failed in repeated test firings in Indian waters.

Defence Minister A K Antony had said on Wednesday that though negotiations were on, the deadlock over the delivery of the Gorshkov still remained to be resolved.

Citing time and costs overruns, Russia had asked for a whooping extra US $ 1.2 billion for the warship, which was scheduled to be delivered in August this year. The delivery of the carrier has already been pushed back to 2012-13.

India and Russia had a similar spat, over the delivery of the upgraded IL-38 maritime reconissance aircraft, when the Navy complained that its dragon suites were not working up to the parameters.

The deliveries were only taken after Russia rectified the suites.

There are some cases to be notified here...

1. The ship MV Leeds Castle was in restricted waters and in that area the depth is not much and hence the mishap.

2. The submarine was submerged and had its radars off and periscope down.

So the submarine not expected a ship there.

So the submarine was in restricted waters, not gonna believe that it was in shallow waters. Would like some confirmation on that.
It had its SONAR off?? Why?
Had its periscope down? If it was shallow waters, why would u being going blind and deaf? If it was deep waters I could see why u wouldnt have ure periscope on, but you still need your SONAR at all times. Somethings wrong in this picture.

Not all of them of course! But many were due to bird hits, seeing that some idiots like building air force bases on the doorstep of cities (or vice versa, build the city right on the doorstep to the base, or expand the city etc.), and garbage dumps attract those damn birds.

India does have technical problems (mostly) because of their extremely aging fleet of MiGs (some are of human error as well). But I'm pretty sure the blame would go on the aircrafts themselves rather then the pilot...
