Iran offers surplus power from nuclear plants to India
Friday, January 18, 2008

By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: Iran on Thursday sought Indian support in its nuclear standoff with the United States, saying it was ready to supply electricity to power-hungry India using nuclear technology.

“Iran intends to generate 20,000 MW of electricity from nuclear plants and can supply surplus electricity to India via Pakistan,”
said Danesh Jafri, the visiting Iranian minister for economic affairs and finance.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Iranian minister sounded optimistic about the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline. He said his country was waiting for India and Pakistan to resolve their bilateral commercial issues.

He dismissed the suggestion that the proposed gas pipeline had stalled because of US pressure. “Opposition may come from anywhere, but we can act despite such pressure,” he said.

I was thinking the same and when i read the head line i was like WTF...

Its like Allowing the water to pass through ur terrortory while ur thirsty.

Iran needs to forget about India (on relying on it as a partner). With just an ounce of pressure from the US, India backed off the IPI deal... Sorry to any Indians out there, but that was quite 'weak'..

Why isn't Pakistan aiming to power 20 000 MW through nuclear plants?!?

I think there is a plan... not sure what the target is though.

Well Iran just do it to get India's support in the UN as I understand?
And India is getting a loot of goodies from the US, maybe to keep the Iranian interest out of India? (And offcourse also to have something to counter China with?)
We really should be able to get a good amount of electricity through this proposed line.

OT: --> Well we tend to forget that Nuclear power generation creates a loot of toxic waste products that needs to be sealed in 100K years(!!) Yes there are some recycling plants for nuclear waste products, but they aren't efficient enough and maybe not even present in Pakistan.

BUT!!!

As we know some of the educationel institutions are acquiring some reactors and other likely machinery for study reasons. Maybe we'ill start to see more efficient Nuclear tech in Pakistan in the coming 10-20 years, but at the moment I don't think we should focus on Nuclear tech.

We have a loot of coal and we should concentrate on how to turn that coal into electricity with a MINIMUM of enviromental damage. Hydropower also has a very LARGE potentiel in Pakistan and so does Solar power.

I doubt that will come about any time soon.

Fully agree! To meet the current energy requirements we need to focus on small dam projects across the country in full swing. We possess the know-how etc. It's only a matter of proper planning and convincing. Also utilize the huge coal reserves. In the meanwhile, focus on other clean energy alternatives in the longer term.

Thats the way of this weird world. But Iran wants to sell them energy, so they'd be getting something out of it. And I agree with the previous post(s) that we need to meet our energy needs desperately as well. Buying power would be a good short term measure.

Personally I think, presently Iran does not have the capabilty or the capacity and infrastructure to generate that sort of electricity!! It will take at least a decade before that starts happening. In other words Just another bluff by the Iranians! When it is more economical for Iran to produce electricity by using oil from their homeland than this notion is absolutely rubbish!
schmuck
We must coordinate with Iran for short term solution of power outages.
In long run, Instead of buying power from Iran, we need to build our own NPPs.

Busehr is coming online this year. Natanz and Darkhoyen in next few years. Infrastructure to supply all the way to India/Pakistan will take years as well....so they are doing what thoughtful nations do, plan for the future. And Iran already has a surplus of electricity and are supplying Iraq and other countries (Azerbaijan, etc). Furthermore, the kwh production price of nuclear/wind/hydel energy is now competitive with oil and gas. Iran's policy makes sense, sell all the oil they can b/c these prices are great for foreign exchange and use energy needs as an excuse to get what they really want, a safety against Israel and the US (n weapons). They'll have excess electricity to sell, jobs at the plants and in downstream industries and the capability to preserve their revolution. Very smart policy.
