NEW DELHI: Iran on Thursday sought Indian support in its nuclear standoff with the United States, saying it was ready to supply electricity to power-hungry India using nuclear technology.
“Iran intends to generate 20,000 MW of electricity from nuclear plants and can supply surplus electricity to India via Pakistan,” said Danesh Jafri, the visiting Iranian minister for economic affairs and finance.
Speaking at a meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Iranian minister sounded optimistic about the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline. He said his country was waiting for India and Pakistan to resolve their bilateral commercial issues.
He dismissed the suggestion that the proposed gas pipeline had stalled because of US pressure. “Opposition may come from anywhere, but we can act despite such pressure,” he said.
