CIA is the famous one, but there are many smaller intelligence agencies in America. NSA or national security agency is one of the most secretive and prestigious, works along with CIA and others, one of its task is spying on communication signals from foreign countries.

From the Vietnam war, all the way to Desert Storm (1975 - 1990), a good 15 years, the period when US grew the mightiest economically.

US was at war plenty of times during this time, US invaded and attacked Grenada, Panama, Libya, Iran, invaded Lebanon, invaded Nicaragua port and airspace, as well as supported numerous rebels and guerillas in war across the world including in Afghanistan. Thats just out of top of my head!
