Another ‘rude shock’
Rs65 increase in five-kilogram ghee, cooking oil tin; USC also increases rate by Rs27

Prices of all five-kilogram ghee and cooking oil brands have jumped once again not only in the open market but also at Utility Stores Corporation (USC) outlets with effect from Tuesday.

The new retail price of five-kilogram ghee and cooking oil in the open market is Rs785 against their previous price of Rs720 — an increase of Rs65. In USC outlets, the new price of five-kilogram ghee and cooking oil is Rs725 against their previous rate of Rs698 — an increase of Rs27.

USC outlets have started selling all brands of ghee and cooking oil according to their revised price of Rs725 per five kilograms.

However some shopkeepers, having old ghee and cooking oil stocks, have been selling five-kilogram ghee and cooking oil for Rs750 instead of Rs785.

Reliable sources told ‘The News’ that ghee and cooking oil prices would register further increase to Rs825 per five kilograms in one week.

District Price Control Committee Chairman Haji Jamal told ‘The News’ on Wednesday that ghee and cooking oil prices have been going up due to hoarding otherwise there were enough stocks of ‘banola’ in Punjab and sunflower in Sindh. In Pakistan, 70 per cent of ghee is being made from ‘banola’ and only 30 per cent of palm oil is used for cooking oil production in the country. Keeping in view this scenario, prices of ghee and cooking oil should decrease rather than registering an increase, he said.

He said that there was an urgent need for devising a policy to control ghee and cooking oil prices in the country. An example should be set by arresting hoarders to provide relief to consumers, he added.

“How can poor people survive when prices of items of daily use are rising every day,” Ahmed Mushtaq, a government employee, told ‘The News’ on Wednesday. He said that the government wants to kill the poor through unprecedented price hike. How can we survive when 1 kilogram ghee is being sold for Rs156, he said angrily.
