ISLAMABAD, July 7: A Senate committee was informed on Monday that Gwadar Port would be made fully operational and connected to Iran by the end of the year.

Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Qamar Zaman Kaira informed the committee on ports and shipping that the government was taking measures to hold the next meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) in Gwadar to take up all outstanding issues on the spot.

The committee which met under the chairpersonship of Senator Mrs Gulshan Saeed reviewed the ongoing projects of the National Highway Authority, Wapda, Civil Aviation Authority and Pakistan Railways and the plans being envisaged by the Ministry of Ports and Shipping to make the Gwadar Port fully operational.

Secretary Ministry of Ports and Shipping informed the committee that the port had been completed and was operational. He said that in order to boost the operational activities, it had been decided in the last ECC meeting that all wheat import for Balochistan would be routed through Gwadar. The committee was informed that the master plan of the port had not been finalised so far.

Regarding sweet drinking water, the committee was informed that a desalination plant of 100,000 gallon per day capacity would be operational in two months. It was suggested that efforts be made to get water from nearby dams, like Shadi Kol and Basole.

Connected via road?

At this moment, the Iranian port at Chabahar is on par, or greater than Gwardar. There is heavy Indian involvement with the development of this port. Rather than acting as competitors, we should collaborate with the Iranis so that both nations benefit from the immense potentials of both ports.

I think that is the goal...the ports together can act as satellite ports for Afghanistan & the Central Asian Republics...Pakistan is already expanding its strategic ties with Uzbekistan. Sadly our relations with Iran & Afghanistan have gone down, and we haven't done much with the other CARs, but I hope this takes a dramatic turn for the best in the near future. Ultimately this could reflare the strong underlying historical bonds in the region.

Iran is under sanctions, even if they build the best port they gonna have a difficult time convincing foreigners to invest.

Linking Iran, and not Chabar port in particular.
And that's the same minister who gave an idiotic statement earlier that there is no roads, electricity or drinking water in Gawadar.

The airport is there, so are the roads.
Iran is linked to Pakistan by rail too.
Once Pakistan Railways links Gawadar, then Gawadar will be linked to Iran as well (for transportation of cargo).

UAE or rather Dubai is minting billions from re-export business to Iran.

If we can get our act together through Gwadar than we too can import thins which Iran uses (since it is under sanctions) .. I am talking about commodities not defense equipment .. small small commodities like shampoo, creams, detergents, water & electricity small pumps, etc etc . than we have a gold & diamond mine at our hands !

But how can we bring our act together ! ... !

The reason for the last Iranian trade minister with the President (where NS supported Minister of commerce did not attend) was for this reason as even after Dubai minting money, now they are also dragging their feet due to US pressure .. and of course Iranians know that and they want second option & Gwadar is a sitting gold mine !

May Allah give some brains to our enterpreneurs in taking up this issue !

Shipping companies offer a much higher rate for Karachi as compared to UAE, the importer will prefer otherwise.
Maritime Insurance companies charge almost double for Karachi, and will charge a whole lot more for Gawadar (war scenario), with eventually refusing insurance alltogether once naval blockade begins.

Pakistani exporters want their goods coming/going out of Karachi or Bin Qasim, as their goods are prone to dissapearance on route to Gawadar. We have a long way to go, in terms of law and order situation, and our 'strategic' neighbours are not helping the cause either.
