The United States Patent and Trademark Office on Monday issued a new patent to researchers Dr Atta ur Rahman, Dr Mohammad Iqbal Choudhary and Dr Syed Ghulam Musharraf, all of them from HEJ Research Institute, University of Karachi (KU) on their novel invention titled: Novel hydroxylated enantiomers of (-) 3a,6,6,9a-tetramethylperhydronaphtho furan as perfuming agents derived from a fungal fermentation process.

Pharmaceutical Scientist Inc, a patent law firm in Deerfield, Illinois, prosecuted the patent on behalf of the inventors. This invention reports novel polar metabolites of (-)3a,6,6,9a-tetramethylperhydronaphtho[2,1-b]furan prepared by a novel process of microbial fermentation using a fungi, Fusarium lini, of unique structures that would be difficult to predict opening up the possibilities of their chemical synthesis. The polar metabolites discovered have stronger aromatic characteristics and offer a new highly prized odiferous characteristic quite different from that of the parent compound and thus can be used in the preparation of perfumes, odor-masking and other odor-management applications.

The method of fermentation used in this invention can be used to create other novel chemical entities including new drugs and is thus constitutes a pivotal discovery. Because of its novel nature, the invention reported has a very large commercial potential worldwide.

Finally a contribution by Pakistani scientists in Chemistry, Organic chem to be exact. I hope to see their names in science books. = )

I remember in Genetics they had discovered a certain gene in mangos also.

Proud to be a Pakistani!
