MINGORA: Eleven people, including a Pakistan Army captain, a Subedar and nine militants, were killed during day-long clashes between the security forces and the Maulana Fazlullah-led militants in the Swat Valley on Tuesday.
The militants also abducted 25 security forces personnel after taking over a security post in Dewlai area which, the officials claimed, was recaptured later in the day. A total of 19 people, including six women, sustained bullet injuries during the fighting.
Sources said some 500 militants laid siege to the Dewlai police post and ordered the security personnel to surrender, which they did. They were then driven away in a truck to an unknown location.
Militant sources said there were 39 security officials in the facility, including 29 of the Frontier Corps and 10 of the district police. However 14 of them fled before the militants stormed the post.
An ISPR spokesman in a statement confirmed the kidnapping of 25 personnel of the Police and the Frontier Constabulary. He said that all the personnel manning the post were taken hostage and shifted to some unknown location.
The militants briefly occupied the police post before being driven out by the security forces that clamped a curfew after establishing their control over the town. Swat TTP spokesman Muslim Khan confirmed to The News the kidnapping of the security officials and said they would only be released after complete withdrawal of the forces from the restive Swat Valley.
Security forces launched a renewed search operation in pursuit of the militants in different parts of the valley.
The ISPR spokesman said that six miscreants were apprehended and two were killed in the operation. A large quantity of automatic weapons and ammunition was also recovered. He added that the arrested militants were believed to be close associates of Fazlullah.
Security forces confronted the Taliban militants in Akhun Killay of Kabal subdivision early Tuesday. The ensuing fighting between the two sides left two dead, which included a captain and a non-commissioned officer while 10 others suffered serious injuries.
There were also reports of nine militants being killed and several others injured in the skirmish. None of the conflicting parties confirmed the fatalities. The slain captain was identified as Waqas, son of a retired colonel of the Pakistan Army.
Major Farooq, in-charge of the Swat Media Centre, however, denied the death of any security forces personnel during the clashes. An ISPR press release issued in Rawalpindi confirmed the death of two security forces personnel, saying two officials embraced Shahadat and 14 others were wounded when they were moving towards Kotlai, Tehsil Kabal, to remove a check-post established by miscreants.
Similarly, the security forces continued shelling suspected hideouts of the militants in Kabal and Matta subdivisions. A mortar shell hit a house in Akhun Killay of Kabal, killing a two-year-old girl, Asma and injuring eight people, including six women of the same family.
The injured were identified as Sajida, Pakdaman, Fatima, Shahnaz, Nadir Khan, Sameen, Bisma and Minhaj, who were rushed to a hospital in Saidu Sharif. Likewise, a mortar shell fell on another house that injured Tasleem and Nayab. Similarly, bodies of two persons, allegedly shot dead, were recovered from the Akhun Killay but their identities could not be confirmed.
Several houses and a mosque were also partially damaged in Ronial, Chapparial and Sar Banda as security forces continued blitzing the hideouts of suspected militants in these areas. A person identified as Syed Haleem was killed and five others were injured in the shelling. However, the report could not be confirmed from independent sources.
Security forces have clamped complete curfew in Matta and Kabal subdivisions of the restive Swat district, causing severe problems for the residents of these areas. Also, the security forces foiled a terror bid and defused two remote-controlled bombs in Ronial area of Matta. Security forces arrested a fleeing suspect from the place of the incident.
Sources said that some unidentified miscreants set on fire a vaccination centre of the Health Department in the Naway Killay area of Mingora city late Monday night, reducing the structure to ashes. Mingora police registered a case against unknown culprits.
The ongoing anti-polio vaccination campaign was wrapped up in Kabal Tehsil and other sensitive parts of the valley after members of polio teams were harassed and beaten up. Polio vaccines were also snatched from the teams by the miscreants in some areas. However, neither the Taliban nor any other organisation claimed responsibility.
In another incident, four rooms were completely destroyed when militants set ablaze a girls’ middle school in Chamtalai area of Khwazakhela Tehsil in the wee hours of Tuesday. Mohabat Khan, watchman of the school, told Khwazakhela police that he was asleep in the school, when a gang of 25 masked armed men came in and kicked him out. He said they doused oil over the structure before showing a match and reducing its four rooms, furniture and other record to ashes.
Khwazakhela police registered a case against the unidentified men. Separately, miscreants also attacked a patrolling police party in Shakardarra area in Kabal Tehsil and the vehicle of a non-government organization (NGO) in Ronyal area of Matta Tehsil. However, no casualty was reported in the incidents.
Meanwhile, unidentified armed men opened fire on the owner of a general store, Musafar, killing him on the spot in Nangolai area of Kabal Tehsil. The reason for the killing could not be ascertained.
