ISLAMABAD: A landmark agreement was signed between Pakistan and China to establish the Pakistan-China University of Engineering, Science and Technology here at the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Secretariat on Thursday.
The MS classes will start in October this year. The construction of the new campus will begin next year and within five to six years, the university will have a developed physical and technological infrastructure.
Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Luo Zhaohui and Chairman HEC Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman witnessed the signing ceremony. Dr Sohail Naqvi, Executive Director, HEC, signed on behalf of the commission while Prof Lin Jintong, appointed Rector of the Pakistan China University (PCU), represented the consortium of seven Chinese universities, led by the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT).
The agreement entails services that will be rendered by two partners during the establishment of the PCU in Islamabad. According to the MoU, the students studying at PCU will be enrolled in top Chinese universities and Chinese qualified faculty will be provided to deliver MS education at standards equivalent to those prevalent in the Chinese universities. In addition, the BUPT will initially award degrees to students who satisfy all requirements.
The Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University and North China Electric Power University will be launching the MS programme in electronic engineering, civil engineering, and energy technology respectively in September 2009. Tsinghua University, Beihang University and University of Science and Technology, Beijing, are among other universities of the consortium who rank number one in their respective fields.
The Pakistan China University is presently functioning at H-8/1. However, the permanent campus will be located on Kuri Road, Islamabad. The university and its associated technology park will be built on a 215 acres.
The campaign for hiring Chinese and Pakistani faculty has begun, which will be selected through a joint selection committee comprising members from both the countries.
