Did Pakistan get more cheer than India?
waz
I was also disappointed. Just where are our boxers? This is a sport we were strong at.

As for India it’s not every impressive considering they have over a billion people…Nether the less, good luck to them and they certainly place a higher emphasis on sport than we do.

Yeah u are right, on Belgium tv commentators said the same thing but in softer other words..." India's population is the second largest in the world after china" but Belgium has over a 90 players, damn for such a litlle country with over a 10 mil people.
I liked the part when France came in. The commentators got confused at a moment they thought the chinees crowd was cheering for France but it was something else then cheering. W00T.GIF

But still Pakistan without it's hockeyteam would be...more less in numbers. CRY1.GIF
Time for Pakistan to promote more other sports then Cricket...

Still Thank u China for the loud cheering for Pakistan bounce.gif CRY1.GIF

Ice, the Indian team was met by a silence…The BBC commentators said that, although Chinese and Indian relations have improved, they have a long to go lol.

Blank, it is high time that Pakistan starts to promote other sports. I was speaking to my uncle and he told me that in the early 60’s, Pakistan had a great gymnastics team and also had some talented swimmers. Then all of a sudden, they were gone. We have to get out of this cricket and Hockey, only rut. Both sports are not played by the majority of the world and it also narrows down a scope for medals. We should be promoting weight lifting, shooting, wrestling, swimming, Tae Kwon Do, Table Tennis, as these sports are established in Pakistan, we only need to improve and take our steps onto the international arena. I mean for crying out loud, our best friend China excels in sports and we could bring them in to help train our athletes. You just have to look at the Chinese training regimes [incredible techniques] to realise why they are set to take the biggest haul of medals in this years Olympic Games.

But this also requires funding and with our sh*tty government sucking the money dry, quicker than a vacuum cleaner on high, we need a serious change, for things to take shape.

Aziz I remember our boxers leaving to train in Cuba for the games and then never heard of them again. God knows what happened. However boxing is in a sorry state in Pakistan…Take a look at this:

http://www.dawn.com/2008/01/28/spt5.htm

It’s better to stick to our expat hopes such as Amir and other guys rising through the ranks!

India, has however, fielded a team.

I watched the ceremony but I quickly forgot.

Which countries got big cheer from the crowd ? Which countries receive silence ?

Did the US receive the big cheer ? What about the S. Koreans (I completely missed out that part) ?

I am very glad that Pakistan received a big cheer.

I remember the Australian or the Canadians got really big cheer from the crowd.

Thanks Waz, I didnt know that, that just shows how Pakistanis boxers get to travel and get to train and fight many boxers from around the world.

I dont think funding is a problem, Pakistani boxers get to travel alot sometimes even more than boxers from the UK did before. They routinely compete in the Asian championships and many other tournaments and do very well.

I seriously dont know what happend this time round, we always have a good strong team which is highly reguarded. I think we have just been very unlucky in this Olypmics.

Yeah UK boxing team is very strong theres a guy called Khalid Yafai a Yemeni on the GB boxing team.

Thats what I was thinking, why not especially the Olympics in China. There should be more people in track and field and other sports that is finically and physically feasible like bike, climbing, boating and other sports like these were Pakistan is the best place to train in, for example: bike, hot endurance in Sind and our highlands of the north, climbing, best mountains in the world found in Pakistan, boating, our beautiful coastal area of Karachi for sailing, wind surfing and rowing. Why do we not talk advantage of our terrain, we have all the god given facilities and talent but we do not use them.

The NBC's coverage kind of marred the event since they peppered the whole thing with political commentary criticizing Iran, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia in particular.

Regarding the cheers here is what I thought:

Chinese Taipai (Taiwan): Biggest Cheer

Canada and USA: Very loud cheering for them

Pakistan: Very warm loud cheering

India: Silence

South Korea: Nothing to note

North Korea: Sizable cheer

3 Gold - 1960, 1968, 1984, and 1 Bronze (Montreal 1976) - all in Field hockey.
Pakistan team's cheer might not have been so loud, but were the only ones to get a standing ovation (besides the host team).

I think its disgusting that for a country of 160 Million people, we had such a small Olympic team !!!.

Investment in sport within Pakistan is almost non-existent.

I remember seeing Pakstan represented in Athletics, Shooting, Gymnasics etc etc in previous Olympics.

But the good news is the massive CHEERS the Pakistani team got when they arrived in the stadium.....ashame the BBC correspondence didnot mention that!!!.

Hockey is a national sport, we do not have the funding to support other games at the mo because SARKAR cannot be bothered to initiate any new training facilities, hire trainers, coaches, nutritionists and physiotherapist’s. All these things are needed for Olympic level athletes. By the way if Lahore armature boxer Salman Khattak had as much facilities and PR as Amir Khan he would already have been in the Olympics.

By the by we do not need Brit's to star for our team we have plenty of talent back home, amir was asked once where his loyalties lie (he said GB) good on him, we can develop our own talent!

I saw the opening ceremony, the most spectacular show I have seen EVER! THANK YOU to our Chinese brethren for the cheer and standing ovation, it was just simply amazing! Thank you China!

England is right, we had some excellent shooters last time around but the problem with that is, training facilities are few (the only one allowed to be used by POC in Islo is the Mobilink Gun Club near Zero Point (to which membership annually is 10 Lakh PKR (Just as expensive to join the damn Islamabad club for Archery Practice) so how can we train our budding archers or shooters to an Olympic level?

We have some excellent technical climbers ( in fact the best Alpine Porters in the World) can we not use them in the Olympics some how?.

Shooting: We have some fantastic pistol marksmen and women, we need to develop facilities that are subsidised and affordable, we need to have a nationally funded football association and sports centres should be developed nationally, we need to make the environment conducive and safe so that foreign coaches, trainers and players can come down and either on retainer or voluntarily to develop our budding talent.

I for one am looking forward to the games, GB has a weak boxing team, Russia is full strength and the Afghan Kick boxer will be something to watch out for, also if I am not mistaken a 14 year old jump diver (Team GB) is the latest emerging talent in the games must look out for him then!

Come on POC, give us more games!

Our boxing players are very good still but it seems that the previous Boxing Federation chairman (don't remember World or Asian) was a Pakistani and had lots of politics around him including pi$$ing many big names for quite a long time. Ofcourse after his eventual goodbye Pakistani boxers have been at the receiving end of several controversial decisions by the panel of judges !

I remember somebody saying that it was really heart breaking for our young boxers .. but we will have to take it for another at least 2 to 4 years .. it will rebound .. but what about others like weight lifters etc !

There was total silence on S.Korea and India's entry.
Loud cheering on Iran, Iraq, Japan, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), and Chinese Hong Kong's entry.

Also, both PM and President of India were not sent an invite, and Bilawal and Rahul Gandhi discussed bilateral and cordial relations between Pakistan and India (in Beijing): http://www.merinews.com/catFull.jsp?title=...rticleID=139114

Pakistan has been one of the world's strongest nations in men's hockey and the majority of its Olympic success has come in the sport. Eight of its 10 Olympic medals have been won by its hockey teams. Freestyle wrestler Muhammad Bashir, who won bronze in the 74kg division at the 1960 Games in Rome, Italy, and middleweight boxer Hussain Shah Syed, who also won a bronze at the 1988 Games in Seoul, South Korea, are the country's only other Olympic medallists.

After finishing fourth at both the 1948 and 1952 Games, Pakistan's men's hockey team earned the country its first Olympic medals at the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia when they made it to the final. They lost out 1-0 to frequent rival India, but gained revenge four years later at the 1960 Games in Rome, Italy when they reversed the 1956 final result to win Pakistan its first Olympic title. From then on, the men's hockey team won medals in all but one of the Games they competed in up until the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain, including further gold medals at the 1968 and 1984 Games.

First OG Appearance: 1948

one thing that did disappoint me about Pakistan team was the flag they carried, look at it it was those cheap plastic shopper type flags of Pakistan on straw pipes. We went to the biggest sporting event and then why were the Flags not sorted and made presentable. After all they did represent the players Country didn't they.

Rest Thanx to the Chinese brothers for the warm support.

can any body make a complaint about the flag issue to POC or is there any site, i would be thankful in bringing this to their attention

I watched the whole opening ceremony for the olympics.
The Pakistani team was smaller than i expected but then again not all the athletes of all the countries turned up for the opening ceremony. Again looking at the yahoo link (with the list of players) the Pakistani olympic team looks very small. Oh well.

The only concellation is the roar from the crowd when the Pakistani team came during the opening ceremony, and the strong support of Pakistan by the Chinese which is always good for morale smile.gif CLAPING.GIF bounce.gif .

Problem is in the UK the coverage is very anti-China and the commentators kept on putting politics into the commentary.
For crying out loud it is not the politics show its the olympics! lol. They just kept on moaning and moaning about China's pollution, human rights problems etc etc like a bunch of discontented women. They even said China was not taking enough steps to curve pollution in Beijing despite the huge efforts from the chinese. Don't forget linking the Beijing olympics opening ceremony to symbolistic propaganda showing China's care for the environment and nature.

hey mind you there.

If you think the BBC coverage was anti China then you should check out the German one. The Germans had a brief talk after the ceremony and they said letting the little child sing the song during the ceremony is child labour, and using the image of children as a tool to humanise the image of China.

The main commentator named Carrie Gracie (yes that's right, the lady that mentioned everything about the pollution, human rights, Xinjiang,Tibet along with other 2 commentators),is of scottish nationality, went to China as early as 1984 to teach rural children English, she then went to China to live for many years as BBC's China correspondent from 1991, and married a Chinese husband and got 2 kids.

By Krittivas Mukherjee

NEW DELHI, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Abhinav Bindra’s mother joked that his Olympic triumph had made him “the country’s most eligible bachelor” as Indians celebrated a historic first individual gold medal.

Bindra’s family led the party after victory in the 10m air rifle event brought joy to a nation of more than one billion.

“He has won the greatest medal in the world,” an ecstatic A.S. Bindra, the shooter’s father told Reuters. Bindra senior is a successful businessman who has provided his son with an air-conditioned shooting range where he can train.

Neighbours and strangers streamed in and were offered sweets at the family home in the northern city of Chandigarh.

Babli Bindra, his mother, quipped: “Now I have lots of work ahead as he is the country’s most eligible bachelor.”

Already, the 25-year-old shooter’s female fan base is growing.

“Abhinav, will you marry me? My parents will have to buy that much less GOLD now,” read one congratulatory message posted by ‘Kaveri’ on the Reuters website.

The family held a special prayer session on Sunday and brought out a newspaper advertisement urging people to pray for their son.

Bindra’s victory eclipsed everything else on Indian TV channels which hailed it as a morale booster for a country with few global sporting stars.

People poured on to the streets in several cities, strangers hugged each other and exchanged sweets and congratulatory messages after the victory.

As the shooter fixed his gaze on the final target, the moment condensed the hopes of an entire nation starved of a solo Olympics gold.

He hit a near perfect 10.8 in a brilliant final shot to pull ahead of Henri Hakkinen of Finland, who stumbled in his last shot allowing China’s Zhu Qinan, the favourite, to take the silver.

India had only won four individual medals, none of them gold, since sending their first team to the Summer Games in 1928.

The Indian men’s hockey team have won the Olympic tournament eight times, but the last time was in 1980.

“We perhaps did not expect a gold and had long resigned to the fact that India performs poorly in the Games,” said Subir Mukherjee, a Kolkata resident.

Former Indian athletes stars hailed the victory, saying the gold will now spur the Indian team in the Beijing Games.

“It is a great achievement,” Vasudevan Baskaran, captain of the 1980 gold-winning hockey team told Reuters. “I’m thrilled, more than when we won our last gold medal.”

“It is important we won a gold medal at the early stages of the Games.” he said. “This will change the way our athletes perform whether it is shooting, archery, boxing or badminton.” (Additional reporting by Jatindra Dash, Geetinder Garewal, Sujoy Dhar and N.
