A lot of people made Major-Gens not so long ago too. Do as many people get promoted every year...how many MGs would that make?
Maybe as many retired.

Why does this make national news? Has it any political implications?

The problem is that in Pakistan, people get promoted because they have a certain philosophy or support the Chief of Army or other non sensical reasons but NOT for their ability as a soldier and military personnel.

PROVE your claim. IF that was the reason then we would have been crushed by india in 65 and 71!!!

some of the most powerful positions like DG ISI,the boss of 10th Corps,DG SPD etc require go ahead from chief himself...otherwise the army has a strict merit system for promotions which is based on ACR's,courses taken, assignments etc..26 brigs got promoted..how can each one of dem be judged by the chief himself?? he has other things to do

This is news for u bro.The Chief discusses each n every case and then gives the go ahead for every promotion after discussing it with concerned officers in meeting room.

650 brigadiers were recommended for promo..how can the chief discuss each n every one of dem??
FYI there is an MS directorate in GHQ which oversees promos..they basically do their home work and shortlist the candidates.only in the final meeting is the chief present wid his CC's and some GOC's..their the shortlisted candidates are discussed wid him and given go ahead..the main job of assessing ACR's,intelligence reports, overall reputation etc is done by the MS branch as i said before

He even discusses cases that are put upto him by several key posts generals for promotion but after discussion, they can be rejected.
