Nawaz to be considered for Presidency, if he so desires: FM Qureshi

Updated at: 1724 PST, Saturday, August 16, 2008
MULTAN: Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Saturday that there would be no need for impeachment against the President if he resigns before the move. Talking to media persons at the local airport, Qureshi said that the President might step down before the impeachment proceedings are initiated in the Parliament.

He said the President may resign today or tomorrow or the day after tomorrow but if he does not do so, the impeachment proceedings will start and continue till its logical end.

To a question the FM said no foreign pressure is being exerted on the government regarding the impeachment move and several countries have already expressed that they honour the Pakistani law and its constitution as the impeachment proceedings are being pursued within the ambit of the constitution.

Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, to another question, said that all the four provincial assemblies, the federating units, have demanded resignation of the President.

The foreign minister said the prevalent atmosphere of uncertainty is causing political and economic instability, so it will be in the fitness of things if the President opts to relinquish the presidency so that stability is revived.

He said the impeachment move was decided after consultations with the coalition partners and to attain stability in the country that is very dear to the nation and was thought necessary to safeguard its vital interests.

He said the ultimate gain would be the strengthening of democratic institutions. He said the mandate given by the sea of people when Shaheed Benazir Bhutto landed at Karachi on Oct 18 and then on Feb 18 in the general elections depicted that they want democracy and reject dictatorship.

To a question about a safe exit for the President, the FM said that the President is short of time and he must quit before the start of the impeachment proceedings.

He said any decision about his safe exit will be taken by consultation among coalition partners, but that is possible only if the President pre-empts the impeachment and steps down.

To another question Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the coalition partners will discuss the matter of the next President and the decision in this regard will be taken with consensus.

Fielding a query, he said PML-N Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif has not so far expressed his willingness to become President, but if he so desires, his wish will be honoured and given due weight.

Only Geo, it's a tabloid news, there is no substance to it really.
Nawaz is legally not elligible to hold any govt. office yara!

Getting a Presidential Pardon doesn't mean past convictions are wiped clean.
NRO didn't erase the charge sheets, please.

Ganja and Gunda or Takla and Tatoo , fits a punjabi movie or a circus, certainly not a country!

Not sure a contract which forfeits a fundamental right is admissible as "legal" in any Pakistani court.

Any agreement under force majeur is in-admissable in court... The Pakistani court system has already invalidated any such deal...

There is a ruling present on the specific issue...

What should be more important is the oath Moshe took when he put his hand on the Quran and swore to uphold the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan...

About that atleast there is no doubt...

yourself and I would have to agree to disagree.

unfortunately though, it is very likely that the I am standing with a Lost horse.

However, still I firmly believe that this very Horse is still miles ahead and lightyears better than the ###### and Raccon hi-jacking democracy in Pakistan.

I wish i could fix up a meeting with yourself/myself and a member of Nawaz's former VVIP staff. s/he goes beserk if you even mention Nawaz's name. s/he would have shared such delicate intecracies of this man's mind and actions that even you would have had siad .... anyone but him. Than again Zardari makes the worst look like angles.

btw, s/he was a govt employee assigned with him and not a chaprasi ...

Had a talk a long time ago with Shujaat Hussain's secretary; when he was appointed caretaker PM (I think)...

The secretary told us that one evening, he left a sheaf of papers on Shujaat's desk and told him to write "Seen" on whichever paper he takes a look at...

Next morning he comes in and finds the papers with the urdu letter ceen written on most... kamal key idiots hain...

Next president could be a woman: Zardari

A woman might become Pakistan’s next president, but any decision will be taken after evolving consensus, Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman Asif Zardari said on Saturday.

In an interview with ARY television, Zardari said President Pervez Musharraf was conspiring against the present government, which gave the public the impression that the president was more powerful than parliament and the bureaucracy was acting upon a “go-slow” policy.

He said democracy would be victorious whether Musharraf faced impeachment or ignored it. He said he was in constant contact with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, but regretted not having taken it onboard on Musharraf’s impeachment. It would take time to convince the MQM on this issue, he added.

Zardari denied he was a presidential candidate. “I would have become the prime minister if I wished to become president,” he said. The PPP co-chairman said he wanted to change Attorney General Malik Qayyum, but Musharraf refused it. He said foreign policy and national politics might change after Musharraf’s ouster.

He said a new chapter would be written in the history of Pakistan after Musharraf, and all problems would be resolved through dialogue.

Zardari said he was planning to convene a regional conference in which Afghanistan, Iran, India and Arab countries would be invited to resolve regional issues. He said every future president would be answerable to parliament. daily times monitor

i feel sorry for pakistan, two criminals in the highest offices.

just imgaine if general kiyani wasnt the man he was. pakistan would be destroyed.

atleast we know if things get really bad and they loot the country and come close to destroying it. the army will step in to save pakistan once again.

and this time democaracy wont return for 50 years, until the army can finally sort out the system in pakistan to make liberal democracy a reality.

If Nawaza ever becomes President Pakistan is doomed.

The bloke is probably the worst politician in the world - he is an amateur.

When judging a person for a position we must look at track record.

The track record is so poor that I personally would not even employ him as my cleaner.

he is a 2 bit crook, and hence not a threat to the Federation.

Ameer ul Momeneed Ganja on the other hand is driven by his ego, and i also think that is mentally unstable and posses a major threat to the federation as he has repeatedly shown inability to handle world powers and allowed non-state and shitty states to interfare in the running of the federation.

i think people don't realize that NS is totally unfit to be a leader of Pakistan...Zardari atleast knows his game

Pak PMs inability to speak in English during US visit termed as disaster

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilanis inability to speak coherently in English on his just-concluded official visit to Washington was termed as an unmitigated disaster because he failed to understand what he had been asked, gave answers that were unrelated to what the query had been.
Washington, Aug 3 : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's inability to speak coherently in English on his just-concluded official visit to Washington was termed as an 'unmitigated disaster' because he failed to understand what he had been asked, gave answers that were unrelated to what the query had been.
Both Gilani and his country would have been better off had he chosen to express himself in a language he could speak with comfort, the Daily Times reported.
He could have spoken in Urdu or Seraiki and a competent interpreter would have done the rest.
Gilani rambled and his thoughts were disjointed and haphazard, his choice of words poor and his grammar and syntax weak during his address at a community dinner at a local hotel on July 29.
At the White House where he walked out from the Oval Office with President Bush to speak briefly - as did Bush - to a group of waiting journalists, he was awkward and unable to express himself either clearly or with precision. He also called Bush 'Mr President Bush' at least twice.
The three days that he was in Washington, Gilani said some most curious things. For instance, he kept saying that Pakistan does not have 'sophisticated weapons' to deal with the insurgency in the tribal areas.
The one example he repeatedly chose of Pakistan's lack of 'sophisticated weapons' was its inability to jam the broadcasts made by tribal insurgents on FM radio. The jamming 'technology', if it can be called that, was available in Pakistan as early as 50 years ago.
He also said that his father had signed the Pakistan Resolution, but the fact remains that nobody signed the 1940 Lahore Resolution. It was read out by AK Fazlul Haq and approved by acclamation.
The Prime Minister and his attendant delegation continued to claim the conquest of Washington inside 72 hours, the fact is that there was no mincing of words from the Americans when it came to Pakistan's performance in fighting the FATA insurgency and its inability or unwillingness, or both, to liquidate terrorists and prevent their movement across the Afghan border.
One source said that Bush had told Gilani that the US was reluctant to share actionable intelligence with Pakistan because of fears that it would be leaked to the very elements that were to be targeted.
No one in Washington has any illusions about Pakistan, nor people here are unaware of where power lies. It is known that the Prime Minister exercises little authority and all decisions are taken by others, the paper reported.
Any commitment that Gilani made to the Americans was seen as no more than a string of empty words, since he is viewed as not having the power or the ability to deliver on anything.
However, the paper termed Gilani's performance as one of the most awkward and embarrassing. Gilani made an appearance in an open dialogue with Richard Haass, one of US leading foreign policy experts, at an event jointly organised by the Council on Foreign Relations and the Middle East Institute.
The large invited audience contained the cream of Washington's intellectual community. Gilani first read a prepared speech, which contained the unfortunate line - that he repeated elsewhere too - 'This is not Charlie Wilson's war. It is Benazir Bhutto's war.'
Asked if Pakistan had the will or ability to fight terrorism, he replied that he had accepted the challenge and Pakistan would go for good governance.
Asked if the Pakistani state was structurally weak, Gilani replied that 'we have inherited this,' adding that the US is facing difficulties in Afghanistan and 'this is a guerrilla war, not an ordinary war.'
When asked why FATA was not being integrated with the rest of the country, Gilani replied that FATA was under the federal government and it had its senators and MNAs 'who are supporting us'. 'Well, good luck then,' Haass told him as the audience burst out laughing.
Replying to a question, Gilani said, 'The US knows more about Pakistan than I do'. To the question about rampant anti-Americanism in Pakistan, Gilani replied that the last government had no political support and used force.
He said the US had backed the military. Asked what the US could do to help resolve Kashmir, the prime minister declared; 'The US can do what it wants'.

I don't think it was his lack of english skills. The man is what you call ... "Gonglo" or "Faju-mamoo" or as in the west they often say ... Not the Sharpest tool in the Shed.

He is just a seat warmer; the fact that he is warming the seat of of PM of Pakistan ... is an unrelated matter.
