Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has handed over his resignation to the country's army chief along with a set of demands, diplomatic sources here said on Sunday.

It was learnt that Musharraf made up his mind to quit after his meeting with the former chief of an intelligence agency last week.

While handing over a hand-written resignation, Musharraf also jotted down some conditions for his exit, which included indemnity from any prosecution, extension of all perks and privileges he is entitled to as president in retirement and full security guaranteed by the army, added the sources.

He reportedly insisted that he would stay within the country and reside at his Chak Shehzad farmhouse in the suburbs of the capital, Islamabad. The farmhouse is currently undergoing renovation.

Sources also told this correspondent that the resignation is with the army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, and will be handed over to the political leadership when all things are settled.

They added some top generals led by Gen. Kayani later met President Musharraf who said he would like to see the charge sheet against him and respond to it before stepping down. At one stage Musharraf is cited to have told the generals: “You have abandoned me, so I am abandoning you.”

He also warned the generals that charges against him like the massacre in Lal Masjid could also apply to some of them.

The generals told him that if the elected representatives of the people thought they were also to blame they were ready to face the charges. It was pointed out that Gen. Kayani had opposed the operation as the then intelligence chief.

Musharraf, it is learnt, would be advised to go for Umrah to Saudi Arabia and then proceed to United States for medical check-up.

Presidential spokesman Maj-Gen. (retd) Rashid Qureshi, however, again denied all reports that Musharraf has resigned.

President of the pro-Musharraf party, Pakistan Muslim League, Quad-e-Azam (PML-Q), Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain told reporters here that Musharraf was not resigning and would confront the charge sheet. He said the ruling coalition had yet not prepared the charge sheet and was only making such claims to put pressure on the president.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is expected to resign Monday and fly into exile in Saudi Arabia, where he is to remain for the next three months, a former aide to the president has told NEWSWEEK on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. The aide added that the news had been relayed to the nation's top military brass, including its powerful corps commanders. Though a current aide to Musharraf confirms that the president will resign, officially, Musharraf's camp denies the story. "Your source is a liar," retired Maj. Gen. Rashid Qureshi, a presidential spokesman, told NEWSWEEK when asked about the president's resignation and possible flight into exile. "The information you have is absolutely untrue."

i don't think its a bad idea for Musharaf to resign, let the 2 crooks run the show until they get each other killed (Murtaza Bhutto anyone? or Nawaz Sharif plotting to assassinate BB?) .... come back as man with the last laugh.

May be leaving the country will weaken his Soldier persona to a mere politician; However, it is important the the pakistani vote bank learns a lesson or two about trusting Fuedals with their destiny.

btw, today is monday, so next 8~ hours will determine the reality of this story.

Monday and Tuesday can become D-Days for Mush to decide. I think he must face charges after stepping down just to show that he did all with good intentions.

and then what?

no charges from his previous term can be brought forward and he has done nothing in the last 3 months.

However, these fuedals, Sardars and Chaudries are after him not because he has done anything wrong; but because they need to show their strenght to the so called "establishment".

No point in fighting these clowns. Leave the verdict in the hands of people of Pakistan.

Mangla
lol. So they got insiders in Army. Seems like a drama written by hollywood writers. "you abondoned me now I abondoned you". I am gonna steal that line.
ofcourse
So, where is the misterious plane going to fly this time? This is getting ridiculous. If Musharraf is thinking about pakistan, he should put up a fight, if he thinks about himself he certainly should put ap a fight. The vultures won't let him go, they will want to have his blood. No way they will let him roam free. He cannot be so stupid as to believe otherwise, and I don't see him living in exile, not in character. Those who have written the script for this drama, either in Pakistan or in London or in Washington or in all three will have to go through with it through the bitter end. Which will not inconvenience them greatly, because they have plenty of writers to write alternative developments depending on different outcomes. They have had them all along, which is why, whatever Musharraf did, there was an appropriate script to still carry on the operation "down with Pakistan".

The moment 58-2B would come into action, believe me, all flight to London and Dubai would be full with crooks and thugs running like hell. I do not know what is there to think in dissolving the parliament. It is in constitution and there are many reasons for it to get used. I believe that under present situation, if Musharraf does not dissolve the parliament than it would be most stupid thing he would do.

As for president, I cannot see any worse that can happen to him if he dissolves the parliament. When people talk about President resigning or taking refuge abroad, than it seems they forget that another option in the hand of President that is valid, legal, and constitutional, is to dissolve the parliament. As for even Pakistan, I cannot see any worse that can happen if parliament is dissolved; rather I believe that if these crooks are sent home than Pakistan would gain a lot economically as well as in stability.

President Musharraf to address nation at 01:00 p.m. ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (AFP)

President Pervez Musharraf is to address the nation on Monday afternoon, his spokesman told AFP, while dismissing rumours that he had resigned to avoid impeachment. “The president will address the nation at 01:00pm (0700 GMT),” said retired Major General Rashid Qureshi, the chief presidential spokesman. Asked about local television reports that Musharraf had already resigned in the face of attempts by the governing coalition to impeach him, the spokesman replied, “It is all nonsense.” Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said it appeared that Musharraf had “seen the writing on the wall” but did not say if he knew what the president was planning to announce. “He is a wise man, he is a very experienced man and he has seen the writing on the wall,” Qureshi told Dawn News television when asked if he had confirmation that Musharraf had resigned. “He has seen the sentiments of not just the elected representatives, but various institutions... who all asked him to move in a particular way and do not destabilize things here,” he said. Pakistan People's Party spokesman Farhatullah Babar said: “His political fate has been sealed. Whatever he says doesn't matter.” (First Posted @ 10:15 PST, Updated @ 11:11 PST)

I think resignation is likely.

So if the spokesman is credible then a few questions arise:

-If he hasn't resigned why is he coming on TV?
-If has already resigned then once again why is he coming on tv?
-He will resign but he will also broken the assemblies?

Bla, bla, bla
MoThSmOkE
He'll announce his resignation on TV in front of the Pakistanis. Not to the assemblies.

The World can make out the difference between the speeches of Musharraf and Yousaf Raza Gillani clearly

President of Pakistan Musharraf is very clear what he is saying. He has command over whatever projects and developments were going on during his rule for the last 8 years.

Whereas the democracp Gillani dosnt know a S.hit only for the last 6 months of his oppsssssss i mean Zardari government.
